“Stella, how’s the baby doing?” Erica shoved more clothes into her suitcase and held back from sighing. The past couple of weeks had stressed her to the max. Her colleagues had been tough on her the past few flights. The passengers were not any better. “I’m leaving for Paris in about two hours. The lines at the airport are long, so I don’t want to be delayed. But I need to stop at the office for a meeting with my boss.”

“Baby is fine, so are everyone. I’m worried about you. And April mentioned she had issues at her job. I’m sure she already told you.”

Erica’s closeness with April wasn’t a secret. “She would’ve told you earlier, but you were in labor. It wasn’t exactly a labor-friendly topic. So I advised her to wait until you and the baby settled back home,” Erica explained. “I’m sorry for the omission.”

“It’s all right. I’m praying for her. I’m not sure about the details, but I heard she’s been temporarily reinstated, pending the investigation’s results. Although I don’t really know what they are searching for except something to throw her off someone’s trail. I fear she got too close to some dirty secret, and some powerful people are fighting to keep it buried.”

“Our God is greater and will defend her. I’m simply worried that her faith in God is sliding, fast,” Erica confided.

“Yes. I noticed. And I’m also praying.” A loud wail from the baby drew Stella away for a moment. Then she returned. “Erica, I need to feed this baby. I also have to go shop for diapers and baby food, as Michael isn’t home and we’ve run out as I just used the last diaper. We don’t sleep much these days, so going out for anything is a hassle. I’ll pray for you to have a safe trip, okay? Keep in touch and let me know as soon as you land. I love you.”

“I will. I love you too.” But Stella said something to someone then returned to her. “Oh, Erica? Jim’s here. He’s visiting us. He and Michael were headed for a short men’s prayer meeting at our church. You guys are friends.”

She said it more like a statement.

“Um, kind of. Wait, what’s he doing there?”

“Hold the line. Here he comes.” Stella hurried off the phone while Erica called her not to bother getting Jim. As it were, she was trying not to speak with him. She’d avoided him successfully for a month. After visiting his place, meeting those boys and seeing how they looked up to him, she made up her mind. She wasn’t good enough. She couldn’t match his generosity and heroic status. No use getting closer to him only to have her heart crushed. But avoiding ended now.

“Hello, Erica.” His baritone sent ripples down her insides.

“Hi. You’re in Maryland to visit my family?” Possessiveness tinged her tone. Though she knew Jim and Michael had become friends a year ago, having Jim in her sister’s house interacting with her nieces and nephews was still odd.
