Chapter 15

Pre-emptive Measures

The skies were cement-gray with thick white clouds engorged like fat ticks. An angry storm plummeted down on the Port of New Orleans and slammed the tides of the Mississippi River violently toward the pier and onto the slick banks. New Orleans Harbor Police stormed across the dock toward the offices of Bianchi-Rizzuto Imports, pushed their way into the building, and demanded every single one of the workers to put down their phones and stand where they were. Junior was in his office. He was on the phone with a chatty client when he saw through his office window the saturated black uniforms of the Harbor Police and his employees standing with their hands raised behind their desks. He sprung from his chair and tried to wrench himself from the talkative client. “Yea, yea, I’ll call you back.”

He stormed out his door into the main office area, where he ran into a big, burly man holding a piece of paper up for Junior to see. Junior snatched it from his hands. The paper was water-spotted in some areas but the bold letters stating WARRANT burst off the page. “Oh, fuck!”

He took long, powerful strides back to his office to call his dad.

But Sal was already aware.

An informant from the police force stopped by Sal’s hospital bed hat-in-hand to give the news. Sal’s strained breaths made his words come out in gruff, broken syllables. “How... bad is it?”

The officer stammered. Sal mustered the strength to reach out and yank the man’s collar. He said in a low, raspy voice. “How bad is it?”

The cop fidgeted. “Officers from multiple precincts launched a full raid of multiple locations. The restaurants, grocery store, even known gambling dens, they all got stormed and trashed. Prohies are hitting warehouses.” The cop stumbled over this next part. “Some of the workers were taken in. They were found with drugs. They’re being threatened with deportation and questioned about your relationship to local politicians.”

A roar like a boom of thunder rolled out of Sal’s throat. Sal got dressed and left, much to the protest of the doctor, and got to a payphone in the first-floor lobby. He phoned his lawyer first. Then he phoned Hymie’s bakery. “Find out who and what started this raid.” He looked out through the glass panes of the phone booth, making sure no one was close. “No loose ends.”

A little leg work and a few hundred bucks got Hymie what he wanted within hours. He got the names of the men who were talking to the cops and feds, three men in total. They were fresh off-the-boat immigrants who could barely speak English. The few words they knew, they used to give up whatever they could about Sal. They were in the interrogation rooms singing about whatever could get them protection.

Clyde was in the middle of screwing Eve when Rory busted into the dark room and doused the interlocked duo in light from the hallway. Clyde rolled over and threw the covers over himself.
