Chibenashi decided to further put off any decision as to what to say to Dakaasin, or whether to respond at all, by reaching out to Ashwiyaa again. He dreaded it; news like this would be even harder on her. He wished he could tell her in person, soften the blow by being present. But he knew that he could not wait. It wasn’t fair to her. He knew; now she deserved to.

He stared at the phone for a long time.

His thumb hovered over her contact information.

He knew he had to tell her.

Instead, he put the phone in his pocket.

He couldn’t do it. Not yet.

He needed to be there with her. A secret like this had to be shared in person. He hoped those damn DNA results would be in soon. He’d already interviewed everyone in Shikaakwa; the existing persons of interest had pointed to no new ones. He could take the results by phone from Baawitigong as easily as he could here. With any luck, he may even be able to catch the Arrow Train home tonight.

Takumwah appeared out of nowhere and interrupted Chibenashi’s thoughts. “We have Sakima’s background results in,” he said. “And some insights on his whereabouts on the day of the murder. You should come look at them.”
