River’s fingers tightened around my wrist as he took in the bustling street in front of him. “I’m not letting you go,” he said in an unusually grave tone. “This place is too easy to get lost in.”

“I won’t take my eyes off you,” I promised him.

It was close to noon now and the streets of Chinatown were bustling with tourists and visitors. Several open-air shops lined the road on both sides, offering everything from ‘I heart NYC’ t-shirts to designer bag knock-offs. Delicious scents mingled with the gas-soaked air, reminding us we were still in the heart of New York City and not some exotic bazaar in a far-off land.

“Where do you want to go first?” I asked.

“How about over there?” he asked, pointing toward a shop that seemed to be selling all kinds of street-style jewelry. River looked half-scared and half-hopeful like he was expecting me to refuse him.

“Sure,” I said and offered him a smile.

He let go of my hand at once and rushed toward the shop.

River’s presence immediately had an effect on the late teen girls who were at the shop. They moved away, giving him space to check out the wares. They were all openly staring at him with fascinated looks on their faces. It was obvious they didn’t come across someone as breathtakingly striking as River every day.

“Get over here, Danny!” he called for me.

“Excuse me,” I muttered as I walked between two young women to reach him.

“Oh my god! Are you guys a couple?” someone gushed from behind us.

“Oh, yes,” said River, smiling at her.

The crowd tittered and aww’d. Next thing we knew, we were being pressed by the young women who started clicking selfies with us.

“Are you part of a k-pop band or something?” a young teen asked River.

She blushed furiously when he glanced at her. He was being utterly clueless but his charm was mesmerizing everyone around him.

“Come on, ladies,” I said, deepening my voice. “Please give my boyfriend some space. He’s here to shop too.”

“Aww! How cute!” they chorused together and gathered closer around us.

“I wanted to see how these look on you,” River said, showing me a pair of small silver earrings with blue rhinestones. He held them up to my ear while the crowd sighed longingly.

“They’re pretty,” I said, trying not to voice the irritation I felt. “How about you get something for yourself too? I’ll just be over there.” I pointed over the heads of our audience to show him the shop selling hats on the other side of the street.

River looked uncertain.

“I’ll come back in a minute,” I promised.

“Okay, then...”

I rushed into the hat shop and grabbed a ridiculously large straw-woven sombrero. “How much?” I asked the vendor who appeared to be of Asian descent.

“Fifty dollars, kid.”

I didn’t even think about the price before slapping the bills in the man’s hand. Rushing back to River, I dumped the hat on his head.

“Have you gone crazy, Danny?” he asked as I pulled the hat even lower.

I grinned, admiring how it hid my boyfriend’s face completely.
