If you love her, let her go

Connor threw himself off his mount. “Vixen!” he cried, rushing to her side. Grabbing her shoulders, he gently shook the unconscious Commander.

Squinting against the bright rays of the sun, the young woman forced her eyes open. “What happened?” she asked.

“You fell off your horse, ma’am,” he said. “How do you feel?”

Carefully seating herself, Vixen rubbed the back of her head. A small bump had formed as a result of the fall. “I feel a bit faint,” she admitted.

“We should take you to the infirmary,” Connor said, locking arms with her. “Your doctor will have to examine you.” He helped her up on her feet, but she instantly sagged.

Vixen’s legs were lacking any strength, her knees constantly giving way. Her mouth watered, the insides of her belly growling and gurgling. She leaned away from her knave, retching as her stomach contents splattered amongst the grass.

“You might have a concussion, ma’am,” Connor said. “We need to make haste.” Aiding her to return to her saddle, he then grabbed the reins of her horse and carefully rode them down the hill in the direction of their camp.

Feeling rising nausea, Vixen fought not to be sick again. The rocking motion of her mount did not help her condition, and she felt saliva building. She leaned out from her horse, vomiting on the ground. She wiped her face, then hawked and spat, the taste foul in her mouth.

When they arrived outside the infirmary tent, she had repeated the procedure another three times.

Connor supported Vixen as they walked inside. “Doctor, the Commander needs your attention,” he declared.

A tall female with dark hair and brown eyes instantly joined them. “This way, ma’am,” she said, leading them to a nearby cot. “Tell me about your condition.”

Before Vixen could reply, her knave saluted her. “I shall be right outside, ma’am.” He left, allowing the two to speak freely.

“I fell off my horse, doctor,” the Commander said. “I felt dizzy, seeing stars.”

“Before or after you fell?”

“Before.”

The doctor grabbed her chin in thought, looking her over. She then examined Vixen’s head, feeling the bump at the back. “And have you disgorged at all?”

Vixen nodded. “I have. Several times.”

“I see.” The woman checked her reflexes, then held a candle up to her face to inspect her pupils. “Everything seems normal. Lie down.”

The Commander rolled back on the cot, immediately feeling her nausea returning. She steeled herself, attempting to allow the doctor a chance to finish.

“Have you felt anything like it before?”

“I have been somewhat fatigued lately, and occasionally felt faint, but nothing like this.”

The doctor began to palpate her stomach. “Tell me if you feel any tenderness.” She moved across, just below the ribs.

“No, nothing.”

Nodding, she continued, moving further down.

“Still nothing.”

As she reached below the belly button, she felt the Commander tense. She palpated further, able to outline a small swelling in the abdomen. Pushing again, she caused Vixen to flinch.

“Yes, fine! It is sore,” the Commander huffed.

“When was your last monthly bleeding, ma’am?”

Vixen instantly sat up.
