I CHASED THE LAST OF the elves from the baggage compartment and looked around. Everything seemed accounted for except the giant mailbag. Too bad I thought, they’ll have to leave it in Santa’s Wonderland, and I locked the door.

“So, we’re all alone now,” Sam Brady said to me in the baggage department.

“I’m afraid so,” I said. “Angel wouldn’t have been any help, anyway. She’s too worried about Chris. They sort of have a history.”

“I understand. Your people did a great job rescuing our auction items,” he said. “What will become of Melvin and Mimi?”

“The Hood River police will lock them up. I have no idea which jurisdiction will handle their prosecution, but I doubt Portland will try to extradite them. It’s probably not worth their effort.”

“How will you handle the return trip by yourself?”

“I guess I’ll be guarding the baggage car. Call or text me if you need me.”

He frowned. “Not the best way to handle things. I tried to get a Hood River policeman to ride along with us, but they don’t have anyone available.”

“We’ll be all right. Send the conductor back to me. I think he can help out by walking the cars and reporting any potential problems.”

Sam left me and I found a chair to sit on. I looked at my phone and noticed it was almost dead. I pulled a charger from my clutch purse and plugged it into a wall socket.

I found a newspaper and scanned the Christmas ads. The train chugged along the tracks and after a short while, I was lulled into a near sleep-light state. I thought about Maxie and how her parents had been upset at me for dragging her into a dangerous situation. How Maxie had stood up for me and told them she wouldn’t have had to look for adventures if they paid more attention to her.

Good girl, Maxie, I thought. She would turn out okay.

A loud knock at the door stirred me from my daydreams. “Conductor,” a muffled voice said.

I went to the door, unlocked it, and stared at a big gun with a suppressor on the muzzle. I backed up and a person in a tuxedo and a Chilly Willy penguin mask stepped into the car. The artic bird was followed by a second gunman with a Goofy mask and a silk black pillowcase.

“Lean against the wall and stretch your hands out,” the person in the Goofy mask said. His voice was synthetic as if altered by some kind of electronic device.

I obeyed and Goofy frisked me and found my Glock, a pair of handcuffs, and the derringer Angel had given me for backup before she left. He also took my iPhone from the table.

“Now, take this bag and fill it up,” Goofy said. “And don’t forget the necklace.”

The penguin had the gun pointed at my head. I hoped the silencer didn’t mean he was going to kill me. They had the drop on me and the best thing to do, I decided, was to cooperate.

I loaded the jewelry into the pillowcase, placing the $300,000 necklace on top.
