She didn’t mean to hurt him. She had no idea who he was. She just saw him as another competitor who was reaching out his hand towards the pyramid to trigger the beacon and win. She reacted on instinct, almost automatically. Her senses and aggression were heightened by the adrenaline coursing through her veins.

She had wanted to win and this man had stood in her way.

The ground suddenly shook, and De Soto broke her trance and looked up as one side of the summit erupted in a large boiling cloud of rock, earth, steel and fire. As she watched, bodies of the Octagon fighters twisted and spun like ragdolls, thrown high into the air.

Then a woman emerged from the cloud of dirt and dust. She staggered forward, heading towards where De Soto stood over Kobe. She was holding something in one hand by her side, her body swaying as she stumbled but recovered. De Soto could see she was saying something, screaming towards them, but there was no sound, just her mouth moving in silent threats. She wore a black envirosuit, just like De Soto’s, and one of her hands was wrapped with material, like a bandage.

To De Soto, everything slowed down, like she was watching the woman advance towards her in slow motion. Her law enforcement training kicked in as her mind tried to process what her eyes were seeing. Revolving images like single snapshots of information scrolled through her brain as it ran its threat assessment cycle: Kobe, her fallen colleague lay at her feet. Injured, confused, but harmless. The woman, closer now, holding something. A weapon?

In the distance, De Soto could see an Octagon Elite crawl out from the blackened crater left by the explosion. His long blond ponytail was now scorched and smoldering. His face was a mask of blood and his armorskin was tattered and ripped. He slowly got to his feet and grabbed an ornate javelin that lay on the ground. Turning, he saw the woman walking towards De Soto. His bloody face instantly twisted into a snarl. Wiping the blood from his eyes, he lined up his shoulders towards her, drew the javelin back and released it in one, smooth powerful motion.

De Soto’s eyes shifted back to the woman who kept walking towards her, oblivious to the shaft of smooth steel that was arcing towards her through the sky.

The bio-pred that was sitting placidly nearby suddenly came alive. It stood, pivoted and bounded towards the woman.

The woman stopped and steadied herself. De Soto could see the woman relax her shoulders slightly as she slowed her breathing. Her shoulders dropped as she brought up the Coded Side Arm that she had been holding and now in both hands, aiming it directly at the bio-pred bearing down on her.

The woman fired and the animal crashed headlong into the dirt, half its head and shoulder disintegrating into a bloom of grey mist.

De Soto switched her eyes skyward and saw the glint of steel almost complete its parabolic arc, spiraling down towards the woman.
