Nicole thought of all the times she’d awakened in the Leipzig camp next to Renée—their first gesture had always been to grab each other’s hand—and felt a stab of grief. Zinka reached for the cigarette case that she had made for Louis Francis. Stay alive, she said to him in her thoughts. Josée began to hum a little song. The women loved this gentle wake-up. They did not know it was Josée’s ritual of prayer that the children she had been helping to hide were still safe.
