CHAPTER SEVEN
JACKY
Jacqueline Aubéry (Jacky)
ON APRIL 19, THE NINE women watched as the day dawned through the slats of the giantsâ barn. Each one was lost in her private thoughts. Jacky prayed that she would find the strength to make it through another day. Nicole thought of all the times sheâd awakened in the Leipzig camp next to Renéeâtheir first gesture had always been to grab each otherâs handâand felt a stab of grief. Zinka reached for the cigarette case that she had made for Louis Francis. Stay alive, she said to him in her thoughts. Josée began to hum a little song. The women loved this gentle wake-up. They did not know it was Joséeâs ritual of prayer that the children she had been helping to hide were still safe.
