23. Tatiana Val:

The Shotgun

The black car rolled over the Manhattan Bridge and eased to a stop at a traffic light. Val poked her head up through the trunk and immediately recognized the familiar landmarks of Delancey Street. She shimmied up and out of the car. Twilight was enveloping the city as she floated south toward Grand Street, instinctively heading for home. Part of her wanted to check in on her mother and maybe whisper some reassuring words in her ear. But by now her mom was sure to have learned all about her daughter’s criminal history, a secret Val had guarded diligently for years. The cat was out of the bag. Her mother was a deeply religious dog and the news that her only child was a professional assassin was sure to have filled her with a deep sense of shame, perhaps even revulsion.

When Val reached the intersection with Grand Street she hesitated for a moment before turning right, away from her old home. She needed to find somewhere to stash her duffel bag full of ghostly cash before she ran into another troublesome gang. Briefly she considered hiding it in one of the many nearby tenements, but there were too many hollow-eyed ghosts lurking in the doorways and windows of these old buildings, timid and barefoot shades dressed in smocks and bowler hats that harkened back to an earlier time.

Val’s next thought was to conceal the duffel bag under a manhole cover on a dark side street, but she quickly dismissed this notion too, worried that someone would see her. Inspiration finally struck as she walked past the Bowery Savings Bank, a palatial building with soaring Roman columns framing the entrance. Was it crazy to hide her money in a bank? She went around to the back of the building and saw nothing but solid stone walls. When she was sure no one was watching she sunk back into the wall, the green duffel bag tucked under her arm. It took an uncomfortably long time to push her way through dense layers of stone, rock, and cement. Making it through to the other side, she arrived at an empty hallway lit by fluorescent lamps. It was quiet, with no hint of either the living or the dead. A preliminary inspection showed no signs of a vault. Maybe it was underground?

Following her hunch, Val dove into the floor, a move she had never attempted before. She passed right through it no differently than a wall and her head poked through the ceiling of an enormous vault. She pulled herself the rest of the way down and dropped slowly to the floor. All around her were piles of cash and coins stacked on rolling shelves. She tried to grab a solid gold bar but her hands went right through it. Only ghost money meant anything anymore. Val unzipped her bag and put one brick of ghostly cash in her left jacket pocket and another brick of cash in her right jacket pocket.
