DAY 8

Lucas Reinhart lived in yet another exclusive community in the Brentwood Hills. This time they didn’t have any issues with the guard at the gate, as they were expected. The guard made the requisite call to Lucas Reinhart and then gave them directions to Mr. Reinhart's estate.

“You can't really see many of the homes from the road,” Harri remarked as they drove up the heavily wooded road. It was narrow with big shrubs on either side. Only driveway entrance gates broke up the monotony of the hedges.

“They like their privacy here,” Tom observed.

They followed the road up the hill until they reached a dead end. A large iron gate appeared before them with an ornate 3251 in the center. Tom pulled into the drive and pressed the call button.

“Is this the LAPD?” a man's voice asked.

“Yes, it is. This is Detective Tom Bards and Detective Harriet Harper,” Tom said into the speaker.

The gates parted, and they made their way up the long drive, flanked by orange trees to the front entrance. This house was palatial. It stood three stories tall and had two wings jutting out from the central portion. To say it was ostentatious would be an understatement. Harri could see a massive chandelier through the glass two-story window above the front door.

“Have you ever been inside a place like this?” Harri asked.

“This will be my first time,” Tom said.

“This place reminds me of Downton Abbey,” Harri said. “Have you ever seen that show?”

“My wife was into that show. I couldn’t make it through an episode without dozing off,” he said with a smile.

As they left their vehicle, one of the massive wooden front doors swung open. A tall man in his 30s appeared on the front step. He had short blonde hair and glasses sitting on his forehead. He was tan and casually dressed in a white button-down shirt and jeans.

“I'm Lucas Reinhart. Thank you for coming so quickly.”

“We were happy to get your call,” Tom said.

He led them through the marbled foyer to the left into a formal sitting room. The furniture and décor were as elaborate and elegant as the house but did not match what Harri would think a guy in his 30s would have chosen. Harri glanced around and thought Harold Walters’ mother would have very much enjoyed this room.

“Do either of you want something to drink?” Lucas asked.

Harri expected at any moment a maid would come out with a tray of drinks.

“We’re fine. You called us about having information on the Miles Davidson murder?” Tom asked.

Lucas waved to several armchairs. “Please sit.”

Tom and Harri took each one of the chairs and he sat in the chair opposite them on the other side of an ornate glass table.

“He hasn’t come forward. I haven’t seen his name in the news,” Lucas said with an air of drama. “I need to do the right thing. I need to tell you what I know.”

Harri wanted to roll her eyes and remind him there was no audience watching.
