After dinner at the apartment, Gabe and I went into the boys’ room. Nick was already asleep on the top bunk. Isaac was out in the apartment with Mr. S. And Jake was in the shower.

“I saw you with Pasha,” Gabe said. “You’re good.”

I sat on my bed. Hello? Did no one go to school games? Of course I was good. Freshmen didn’t make varsity unless they were better than good. “Thanks.”

“Did you beat him?” Gabe asked.

“Even with a handicap.” I explained about Alex. “You know Pasha and Yuri have Bratva tattoos? Real ones.”

“I don’t believe in getting tattoos,” Gabe said.

“Well, the design was awesome.” But here was another thing that didn’t make sense. Tattoos were expensive, weren’t they? Just like pot. How did homeless kids pay for this stuff ? They must be pickpockets. Or maybe they were breaking in to houses and stealing jewelry. Some guys in Pilot Point did that to pay for drugs.

Gabe dumped out his backpack on his bed, and a slip of blue cardstock fluttered to the floor. His eyes went wide. He grabbed the paper, studied it for a full minute, then looked at me. “Test assignment.”

I eyed the card. “Anything cool?”

“Nah. In fact—” Gabe dug through the pile on his bed and picked up two more cards. One was red. “I’m supposed to destroy them but haven’t gotten around to it.” He shuffled though the cards and put a blue one in the front pocket of his backpack. He tossed the other two on my bunk. “You can read those.”

I grabbed them. “I thought you’re not supposed to tell.”

Gabe dropped his backpack on the floor. “You’re not, but new recruits help with the team assignments anyway, and the other one will be public, so it doesn’t matter.”

I examined the blue card first.
