4. Turn the bucket right-side up, so that it’s sitting in the upturned lid. Install a screw-top lid with separate frame, as shown here, or simply use a snap-on lid with a pour hole and cap. Unscrew the pour-hole screw top and fill the bucket with chicken feed. Let the chickens know it’s dinnertime!

VARIATION: CHICKEN WATERER

Chicken owners are increasingly turning away from traditional watering troughs to newer, more sanitary ”nipple feeders.” These feature simple nipple valves that the chicken pecks for a quick drink. Because the water is kept in a closed container and the nipple ensures a seal, many advocates consider this a good way to ensure the water source never becomes contaminated. Most chickens figure out the nipple system almost immediately. You’ll be using push-in nipple feeders (these can be found at any large feed or supply store, or online—do not buy screw-in styles); follow the instructions supplied with your nipples. Use a chain and an S hook to keep the waterer off the ground so that chickens don’t step in it and foul the water.
