A bright light flashed before my eyes. We all collapsed, fully materialized, onto the ground. I kept my eyes closed and waited for the sting of the darts.
âWhere are they?â asked Connor.
I sat up, and the world spun. The Major and his Agents were gone. The spork had missed David and landed harmlessly on the ground.
âMaybe Connor faded them,â said Zoe.
I blinked in and looked around. There was no yellow. Something seemed wrong about that, but I didnât register what it might be.
âDid anyone see that red mist? What was that?â Hannah said.
âIt came from David,â said Connor.
âAnd the flash of white light? Jenna, did you smoke the Major?â asked Zoe.
âNo, of course not.â
âIâm not judging or anything.â
âIt wasnât me. Did we lose consciousness?â I felt the back of my head for a fresh wound indicating the Agents had injected something into me.
Hannah was sitting in front of me, staring over our heads.
âWhatâs that?â she asked.
We looked towards the top of the hill to see a white band of energy about fifteen feet high, going as far as could be seen towards the west and disappearing over the hill to the right. Pulses of yellow light flew along it.
âDid we do that?â asked Zoe.
I took stock of who was around me. Zoe and Hannah were still sitting on the ground, my dad had his head between his knees, hyperventilating, and Connor was checking on David, who had curled into a fetal position on the ground.
âHey, look at this,â I said. Walking over to something on the ground, I picked it up. It was a bundle of clothes.
âAre these Vinceâs clothes?â I asked. I passed the sweats to Zoe, but left the underpants on the ground.
âVince was wearing this stuff before he faded, right?â Zoe asked Hannah.
Hannah nodded. âI wonder why they didnât disappear.â
âVanessaâs stuff doesnât disappear. It just drops to the ground, like this,â said Connor.
Zoe went through the pockets and pulled out a cell phone.
âThe two-faced bastard, he was messaging them.â She raised her arm in the air. âNo signal.â
âDavid, come on. Weâre all okay,â Connor said, looking at the white energy field. âMaybe their stupid new tech wiped them all out.â
âIt was created by Doc Philipson. Iâm pretty sure he didnât know his arse from his elbow,â said Zoe.
âI suggest we get the hell out of here before more Agents turn up,â said Dad.
I blinked in and took a last look around. Nothing. I realized what had seemed odd.
âZoe, youâre not emitting,â I said.
We all looked at her, and she looked at herself with a huge smile.
âHey, maybe their stupid new tech fixed me. I donât feel tired anymore,â she said.
David reached down and picked up the little metal spork. He wiped his eyes and put it in his pocket. Looking out for Agents as we went, we walked down the way we had come. When we got to where the car should have been, it was gone.
âDamn it. They took the car,â said Connor.
âIt would appear they also took the road,â said Dad.
