CHAPTER THIRTEEN
I was so engulfed by the surreal events of the day that I started to play into the nightmare. I knew I was obstructing justice by not telling the police everything I knew, but I couldn’t. I was too afraid.
By the time I got back to the station, Alicia, Cynthia, and Pam were sitting in a room waiting for me to return. I passed them the cups of coffee which I picked up on my way back and sat next to my wife. As the hours passed, we spoke only when necessary. There was no conversation, only stares and tears. Every time a door opened, we looked in its direction, hoping Mike would emerge from beyond it.
Pam held Cynthia’s hand while we sat and waited. She only released her hand one time. That was when she stepped away for a moment to make a telephone call.
When she returned, she held Cynthia’s hand again without saying a word. Maybe an hour later, Wanda, Lisa, Darsha, and Valerie walked into the station. Wanda was still wearing her nightclothes. I knew Mike was close to the office girls, but even I was surprised to see their loyalty to him.
It’s not like they kept in contact with one another on a regular basis. But when one of the so-called office girls was in distress, they came a-running. All of them!
“Somebody better get to explaining why I’m at the police station in the middle of the night!” Wanda said with her hands on her hips.
“Mike is being questioned for a murder,” Cynthia said.
“Murder? Mike?” Wanda asked. “Come on now.”
“Who was killed?” Lisa asked.
“Gizelle,” Pam said. “The singer.”
“Gizelle?” Darsha shouted. “The Gizelle?”
“Yeah,” Alicia said, “she was our new client and wanted Mike to help her write a book. Mike went over to help her and that’s all we know.”
“Y’all know Gizelle?” Darsha asked.
“We knew Gizelle,” Pam said.
“So why are they questioning Mike?” Lisa asked.
“We don’t know, they won’t tell us anything more than that,” Alicia answered.
“You okay, Cynt?” Valerie asked while sitting beside her and rubbing her back.
“No!” Cynthia said, wiping her eyes.
“It’s going to be all right, baby,” Valerie said. “You know Mike don’t have nothing to do with this.”
“I’m scared, Val,” Cynthia said.
“Hey, look,” Wanda squeezed between Cynthia and Valerie, “ain’t nothing gon’ happen to Mike. You know that straight-ass niggah ain’t did nothing wrong.”
“I appreciate y’all coming down, but this might take all night,” Cynthia said. “I don’t expect y’all to stay here all night with me. Go home and get some sleep.”
“I ain’t goin’ nowhere!” Wanda said.
“Me neither!” Valerie said.
“Me neither!” Darsha agreed.
“I’m not going anywhere, either, Cynt,” Lisa said.
“And you know you better not even look over here at me,” Pam said.
“Now, how do you like your coffee, black or cream?” Darsha asked.
“I’ve already had coffee,” Cynthia said. “But thanks anyway.”
“You can get me some,” Wanda said.
“Hey, get me some, too,” Val said.
“You better bring your ass on, girl,” Darsha said.
“You was gon’ get Cynthia a cup,” Val said.
“You ain’t
