Symptoms

Fatigue

Pressure or discomfort in the right upper abdomen

Fatty liver, also known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), doesn’t typically have symptoms present, except for maybe the two listed above. There are fatty infiltrates present in the liver.

Root Causes

NAFLD is mostly a condition associated with poor diet and lifestyle habits. Incidences are increasing in the United States, presumably due to increases in diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity, which are diseases that lead to NAFLD. Hypertriglyceridemia (elevated blood triglycerides) is also associated with NAFLD. When there are too many of these fats in the bloodstream and/or there is blood sugar dysregulation, it appears as though the body starts to deposit some of those fats in the liver.

Some medications can cause fatty liver, and just as overnutrition can lead to fatty liver, the opposite is also true. Severe malnutrition and starvation diets can also lead to NAFLD.

This increased fat in the liver causes inflammation and oxidative damage to the liver cells. The cells die and the liver will enlarge, just as it does with alcoholic fatty liver. Over time, the liver can become fibrotic and undergo cirrhosis from NAFLD.

Testing

CBC

CMP, Fasting

Fasting Lipid Panel

hsCRP

Hemoglobin A1C

Hepatitic C Antibody

Iron Panel with Ferritin

Liver ultrasound can see fatty liver and a biopsy can tell the difference between fatty liver caused by alcohol or not.

Treatment

Dietary Approach

Visit and follow the diabetes section (here ) for more information regarding dietary approaches, as these will directly apply to NAFLD. Aside from those recommendations, here are a few more specifics:

Eat Brassica family plants regularly.

Eat beets regularly.

Eat onions and garlic daily if possible.

Eliminate fructose and other refined sugar.

The liver is the primary detoxifying organ of the body. It has a hard time doing its job when burdened with NAFLD. Eat organic wherever possible to reduce toxin exposure.

Although it’s a high-fat diet, a ketogenic diet may decrease NAFLD if the daily calories do not exceed the energy expenditure.

Herbs/Supplements

Vitamin B Complex – one serving daily

Magnesium – 300–600mg daily

Taurine – 500mg two to three times daily

N-Acetylcysteine – 600mg two to three times daily

Milk Thistle – 1g two to three times daily

L-Carnitine – 500–1000mg twice daily

Visit the diabetes section (here ) for additional supplement and herb information that will be useful in improving blood sugar regulation.
