Chapter 44
Click, click, click was the only sound you could hear early Friday morning in the office of MaryBeth McCarthy. Only two clients had come in the entire morning, giving both Joan and Beth time to catch up on some litigation work. Beth had two cases pending, and now the lawsuit. She wanted to get the suit on the docket at the courthouse as soon as possible, so both Joan and Beth were working at almost warp speed; of course, they had to be very articulate at the work they performed.
Joan was studying the computer intensely when all of a sudden, the front door opened. Joan looked up at the six-foot-plus man, and it was Ted. She smiled and said, âGood morning, handsome. Maybe you could come over here and sit on my lap and give me a hand.â Joan loved to tease Ted as he would blush like a teenager at times. As Ted started to walk around the edge of Joanâs desk, in haste, she said, âBeth is busy. Let me get her for you. I was kidding. I have more work to do and no time for play. But maybe next time.â
Since Bethâs door to her office in the back was closed, Joan pushed a button on her phone, then said, âYou. have company, my dear. I hope you are not too tired to entertain.â
Within seconds the door to Bethâs office opened. Beth stepped through the door, looking somewhat tired but still radiant in her tan skirt and white blouse. âGood morning, Detective. You should be home resting so you can go catch some bad guys.â Beth knew she had to walk on eggs, as Ted was one of the officers at the arresting scene of Ethan De Leon.
âI donât need much sleep, but I do need to eat. The task force leader and the FBI kept us for a special meeting this morning. Our breakfast was a do-nut and coffee, which helped add pounds I donât need. I am hoping I would have the pleasure of taking you to lunch.â
âI would love to have lunch with you, Ted. But first, you must answer a question.â
âIs that all? If I had known this before, I would have asked for your hand in marriage.â Then Ted laughed while Beth got red in the face.
Caught off guard, Beth never said a word for several seconds, then she said, âTell me the truth. Did you hit and kick Mr. De Leon like the other cowboys?â
Ted was not ready for this question. He was aware that Beth had been to the Sheri fâs office and was also suing the county. He looked at the floor, he did not want to make eye contact with Beth, but Ted knew that the truth was the best answer, or any chance he had of dating Beth was through. âIn a stupid rage and grief for those killed, I kicked Ethan in the leg once. Then I heard the FBI Agent In Charge yell. I got ahold of myself and stopped.
