(1) Mu’āfir: it seems that only a few of this clan entered Spain with the Syrians. Ibn al-Khatīb mentions the name of ‘Uqba b. Nu’aym, who settled in a village near Lūsha, Loja, some 50 kilometres south-west of Granada, as a member of the jund of Damascus.244

(2) Judhām: only one member of this clan is mentioned as having entered Spain with the Syrians. He was ‘Abdulḥamīd al-Judhāmī, who settled near Elvira in a village belonging to qal’at Yaḥṣub.245

(3) Kalb: the only Kalbites in this district were some of those related to Abū al-Khaṭṭār al-Kalbī, the Governor of al-Andalus. They settled in a place called Walba or Walma, belonging to al-Barājila’s fort near Elvira.246

(4) Ghassān: Ibn al-Khaṭīb mentions a village near Granada called Ghassān.247 Apparently, it was the area of settlement of this clan in the district of Elvira. Another early settlement of Ghassān was to be found in Guadix, where the Ghassānī ancestor of Banū Ḥassān and Banū ‘Umar lived.248 The sources also refer to some other people of Ghassān, including Sa’īd al-Ghassānī, who was one of the jund of Damascus,249 and Diḥya or Wajīh al-Ghassānī who started a rebellion in this region against ‘Abdulraḥmān I.250

(5) Hamdān: Elvira was the place of settlement of this clan in Spain,251 where they owned a whole region called after them iqlīm Hamdān, situated south of Granada.252 The sources also mention one of their villages in this region as bearing the name qaryat Hamdān, Alhendín.253 Some historians consider these people to be Syrians,254 but, as Shaban believes,255 this is impossible because there could not have been any in the original jund of Damascus in Syria. Yazīd b. al-Shamīr, the grandfather of Banū Adha al-Hamdāniyyūn in Elvira, was the first to settle in the village of Hamdān, Alhendín.256 Al-Anṣārī records another family of Hamdān. Their ancestor, Hadīda b. Zubbān, settled in a village called after him, Banū Hadīda, situated in the valley of Bayra.257
