(1) MuâÄfir: it seems that only a few of this clan entered Spain with the Syrians. Ibn al-KhatÄ«b mentions the name of âUqba b. Nuâaym, who settled in a village near LÅ«sha, Loja, some 50 kilometres south-west of Granada, as a member of the jund of Damascus.244
(2) JudhÄm: only one member of this clan is mentioned as having entered Spain with the Syrians. He was âAbdulḥamÄ«d al-JudhÄmÄ«, who settled near Elvira in a village belonging to qalâat Yaḥṣub.245
(3) Kalb: the only Kalbites in this district were some of those related to AbÅ« al-Khaá¹á¹Är al-KalbÄ«, the Governor of al-Andalus. They settled in a place called Walba or Walma, belonging to al-BarÄjilaâs fort near Elvira.246
(4) GhassÄn: Ibn al-Khaá¹Ä«b mentions a village near Granada called GhassÄn.247 Apparently, it was the area of settlement of this clan in the district of Elvira. Another early settlement of GhassÄn was to be found in Guadix, where the GhassÄnÄ« ancestor of BanÅ« ḤassÄn and BanÅ« âUmar lived.248 The sources also refer to some other people of GhassÄn, including SaâÄ«d al-GhassÄnÄ«, who was one of the jund of Damascus,249 and Diḥya or WajÄ«h al-GhassÄnÄ« who started a rebellion in this region against âAbdulraḥmÄn I.250
(5) HamdÄn: Elvira was the place of settlement of this clan in Spain,251 where they owned a whole region called after them iqlÄ«m HamdÄn, situated south of Granada.252 The sources also mention one of their villages in this region as bearing the name qaryat HamdÄn, AlhendÃn.253 Some historians consider these people to be Syrians,254 but, as Shaban believes,255 this is impossible because there could not have been any in the original jund of Damascus in Syria. YazÄ«d b. al-ShamÄ«r, the grandfather of BanÅ« Adha al-HamdÄniyyÅ«n in Elvira, was the first to settle in the village of HamdÄn, AlhendÃn.256 Al-Aná¹£ÄrÄ« records another family of HamdÄn. Their ancestor, HadÄ«da b. ZubbÄn, settled in a village called after him, BanÅ« HadÄ«da, situated in the valley of Bayra.257
