Command decisions. Three officers confer: Major Bundy (left), Colonel Duncan (center, dark blouse facing camera), Captain McGlachlin (right, back to camera).
For three days Duncan had orchestrated a patient advance that had kept his losses to a minimum. With all three columns in position he decided to order a dawn assault. The major problem he envisaged was the danger of friendly fire when the attackers gained the summit, particularly since Lawton on the east trail and Koehler on the west would potentially confront each other across the crater rim at a range of under two hundred yards, well within American lethal rifle range.
Either Lawton or Koehler would have to stay off the rim. Duncan chose the numerically weakest command and ordered Koehler merely to maintain a blocking position. His orders to Lawton and Bundy required them to unleash simultaneously the final assault at daybreak. To assist Bundy, Duncan ordered the crew of a Colt automatic gun, a forerunner of the gas-operated modern machine gun, to bring the gun from its reserve position in Jolo.
So, for the second night in a row, companies of American regulars and a handful of constabulary endured a disturbed night on the chilly slopes of Bud Dajo as the Moros again serenaded them with beating gongs and drums, taunts, song, and lantaka discharges.
