CHAPTER 12
Nicholasâs slippers shuffled into the kitchen. âYou did the dishes. I knew I was gonna like you.â Then he opened the creaky fridge and saw the bare shelves. âI donât suppose you want breakfast though?â
âYou did the dishes?â Michelle said behind him, the baby dangling in her arms.
Nick nodded in Samâs direction. âBut he was hungry. At least he left us some eggs.â He pulled out a carton, flipped the top and grinned at a dozen bald domes. âScrambled?â
Beatriceâs rose-coloured lights wriggled towards Sam. The boy tapped them back one at a time. Her small hands flexed open and closed, catching rebounded flickers.
Michelle fixed a kiss on Nick. âIâll take you into town this morning and buy something you want. Samuel needs new clothes and if we hand him over without a good spit and polish they wonât consider us ⦠I mean, they wonât think weâve taken care of you.â Michelle patted Samâs shoulder.
âYeah, the vision of him in Dadâs old Elvis shirt is a bit much,â Nick said. âMum, do you mind getting me that Badâun T-shirt while youâre there? You know the one, right?â
âThe red one?â She frowned as he sighed. âI take notice.â
âLast winterâs anorak says not.â
Sam wondered why she laughed.
âYou want a new shirt to look nice for that girl?â
Nick flushed.
âNot for Maggie?â Sam groaned.
Michelle folded her arms. âStop scowling. Itâll happen to you soon enough.â
âIâm never going to be in thrall to a banshee.â
âOuch,â said Nick. âHarsh!â
Michelle stroked Samâs cheek. âYouâll understand one day.â
âWhereâs Dad?â Nick asked.
âBeatrice kept him up all night so I let him sleep in. Weâll get out of the house and give him some peace.â
Sam smiled. A morning with Beatrice would be a treat and moving might keep them all a bit safer, until Daniel returned.
âIâll look after her,â Nicholas offered. âIâd rather not hang out with you and Sam looking for Spiderman T-shirts. I can watch TV and stick Bea in the rocker.â
âWhoâs Spiderman?â Sam asked.
Michelle pressed her lips together. âSheâll need a feed and be put down for a sleep.â
âWell, what if she goes to sleep while youâre out, wonât you want to come home anyway?â
Michelle patted Beatriceâs nappy. Blue sparks flew from her bloomers. âI suppose we wonât need to be gone more than an hour. We could shop in an hour, couldnât we, Samuel? I could get this one a pair of jeans too.â
Sam gave her his best unknowing grin.
âGo on,â Nick said to Sam. âWork your magic on Mum. Whatever youâre doing makes her happy. Talk her into getting me a voucher. I donât wanna end up with mum jeans.â Nick chuckled. âAnd Mum, get him something decent cos that lookâs not working for him. No collars. Let him look normal.â
