CHAPTER 11
Embassy of the Democratic Peopleâs Republic of Korea, Mexico City
Le Docteur stood on the street corner in one of Mexico Cityâs nicer neighborhoods, just outside the embassy of the Democratic Peopleâs Republic of Korea (DPRK, for short) and studied the building.
The building looked well kept, with its clean white and brownish-yellow exterior, the arched deck, and decorative windows. There was a small sign above the door stating it was the embassy of the DPRK and a flagpole with the national emblem could be seen on the roof.
He had found the addressâCalle Hally No. 12, Colonia Anzures, Delegacion Miguel Hidalgo, on the web, and knew it was one of the few embassies the country possessed. Not many people applied for visas to travel to the DPRK, and only a handful of those received permission to visit. People who have been there testified in public it was a fascinating place and worth a visit, but in private complained they were constantly watched and strictly forbidden to speak to the local people.
One cynical tourist said it reminded him of a tour of Universal Studiosâyou were shown the polished façade but had no idea what lay behind it.
Le Docteur remembered the fate of the young American who removed a poster from the wall in his hotel, supposedly to take it back home as a souvenir of his visit. He was arrested, punished severely, forced to confess to crimes against the DPRK, and only after intensive diplomatic efforts, official and unofficial, was freed to return home. Alas, by then his physical condition was so bad he died shortly after arrival in the U.S., despite the medical treatment he received.
Le Docteur was glad he didnât intend to travel to North Korea, only planned to meet with representatives on relatively safe ground in Mexico.
Gingerly, he walked up to the solid-looking dark door and knocked on it. He didnât have to look around to know his every move was recorded on a surveillance camera, so he kept a straight face with a small smile. He had altered his appearance in such a way that even his Lara wouldnât have recognized him. In fact, she was anxiously waiting for him at a nearby café to which he intended to bring his North Korean contact.
The door opened and a rotund man, who was obviously Korean (Le Docteur couldnât distinguish between men from South Korea and the DPRK), with a solemn expression, asked, âAre you Don Alberto?â The name Le Docteur used when he called the previous day. When he nodded, the Korean added, âI am the Cultural attaché of the DPRK in Mexico. Would you like to come in to discuss the business you alluded to?â
Entering the embassy was the last thing Le Docteur wanted. He looked over his shoulder to be certain no one was behind him, and said, âIf you donât mind, I prefer to go to a public place. I have had some unpleasant experiences entering heavily guarded buildings in the past.â
The shadow of a smile crossed the Koreanâs face, and he nodded.
