TWENTY-FOUR

Megan spent the rest of the evening in the attic bedroom, mainly to avoid any sideways questioning stares from her sister. Even though she’d asked Nicola not to tell Ben about the pregnancy test, Megan was almost certain it had already happened. Probably as a text message as soon as Megan had left the room. Nicola and Ben didn’t seem the sort of couple who kept much in the way of secrets from each other – although Megan had once thought that about herself and Paul.

Problems were coming.

Megan had covered for her niece because she’d seen the horror in the poor girl’s face as her mother had been holding the test. It couldn’t last forever, but would hopefully give Jessie enough time to get some sort of response from Lucas the drama teacher.

Megan googled him, along with the school name. Lucas Fernandes had that ‘well actually, Hoover is a brand name’ kind of face. He was thirty-seven and his Facebook photo showed him wearing sunglasses with his face smushed into a woman’s of a similar age. The rest of his profile was hidden, though it seemed likely he was married. Either way, he was definitely twenty years older than Jessie.

No wonder he wasn’t answering his phone.

The age of consent was sixteen, Megan googled that too, although she was sure there was something about abuse of trust when it came to teachers getting up to no good. Either or both of those options were still open, but for another day. What she mainly felt was rage against this Lucas fellow. This teacher who had taken advantage in the worst way. He would have to be held accountable one way or the other, but Megan wasn’t sure how to reconcile that with her niece’s wishes.

Megan continued swiping on her phone. The local news was full of stories about the man who’d died on the rocks. It felt like such a long time before that Megan had stood in the mist and watched the body be carried across the beach, even though it was only that morning. Most of the rumours heard across the day appeared to be true. He’d had an argument with his wife and, while she’d headed back to the caravan park, he’d remained out. The next thing anyone knew, his body had been found by that dog walker. The police were asking for witnesses, although it seemed unlikely that the truth of what had happened could be known for sure.

Sophia was never far from Megan’s thoughts. The big guy at the back of the café had said she didn’t speak English but perhaps she could understand some? Either that, or Megan could use Google Translate to try to talk to her. She wanted to ask if she’d been in the woods on Sunday afternoon. Had she been
