At breakfast the next morning, Harriet sat next to Kenny and me, and I was ok with that for some reason. Breakfast was a protein bar that was said to contain as much protein as an omelet and bacon. When I asked why we couldn’t just have the omelet and bacon, I got one of those severe silent stares from the cafeteria lady that scared me for a moment.

“You know what,” Harriet said, bunching up the wrapper of the protein bar, “I think those kids over there are cheating.”

My heart began to race. Did she know about me, too?

“Ah, why do you say that, Harriet?” I asked nervously.

“I don’t know. It’s kind of fishy how they are winning so many competitions. I’m determined to catch them, and when I do, I will tell on them and they will get disqualified and kicked out of camp and banned for life from all competitions in this world!”

Oh no! That’ll happen to me, too! I was so nervous I didn’t know what to do so I changed the subject.

“So, ah, do you guys believe in aliens?”

“No. They don’t exist, except that lonely people in the countryside sometimes think they see flying saucers, only no one’s ever around to witness it, and they’re really just hungry and far from the fridge so they hallucinate. That’s my theory,” Harriet said.

“I agree!” said Kenny. “We’d better go. The French competition starts in a few minutes.”

Then we made our way to the classroom and, as I’d expected, I won because I already knew those words, and the victory didn’t even feel good because I knew I was cheating. Ugh. I wish I could stop, but it feels like I’m stuck in a hamster wheel of cheating and can’t get off. What should I do?

Next there was an arts and crafts contest, and by this point I was so exhausted I just wanted to go home. But I had two more days of this craziness to endure before that.

The arts and crafts competition was kind of weird because there would be judges and they would decide which entry was the best. I thought that was odd, but got an idea. My mother had put the necklace she’d made when she was in camp years ago in my suitcase for good luck. It’s really nice and ornate and not something I could ever do. I sat next to Kenny trying to replicate it and what turned out was a disaster. I really am not good at arts and crafts it turns out. I looked over at Kenny and he was busying himself making a mini totem pole of the cast of Full House, only they looked like monkeys, not people. He looked happy with his creation so I didn’t want to burst his little bubble. I just sat there disappointed in myself for not being able to make anything good and wondered if anyone would discover I’d cheated at the obstacle course and the French contest. Then I got an idea.
