Thank goodness Joel isn’t here when I walk out with the giant sun. When I put it in my office he’d grimaced and said, “Oh no, did another client try to pay you with some ugly old antique from their attic?”

The poor guy turned ten shades of red when I told him it was a gift from my husband.

I plunk the thing into the passenger seat, and one of the rays slices my finger.

“Ouch!” I leap back, sucking at the wound. My own blood is hot and metallic in my mouth, and there’s plenty of it, but I don’t even consider checking to see if I need stitches; there’s no time.

I hop behind the wheel and shoot a quick text to Robert’s number. I don’t know who is on the receiving end, but they said they would let me know where to bring this thing—whatever it is. I pull a scarf out of my glovebox; luckily there are still some there from when Robert and I used to grab a quickie in the parking lot at lunch, and I’d need to cover stubble burns on my neck in order to go back to work. Now though, it’s just catching my blood.

I spot an empty parking spot and pull off the road, waiting for further instructions, and check my finger.

I don’t think I need stitches, but I should probably make sure my tetanus shot is up to date. Who knows where Robert got this thing. His work can take him to some odd places, and I’ve seen some weird things sitting in the back of his car every now and then, but I never asked questions.

And why not? I suddenly wonder. Why the hell not?

I’m a lawyer, for Christ’s sake. I know better than most the many ways in which people will lie, cheat, and steal in order to get what they want. I’m not saying that Robert is doing any of those things—in fact, it seems like he’s the victim in this situation—but that doesn’t mean I should go walking into this particular trap like a wide-eyed virgin. I haven’t been one of those in a long time.

But being wide-eyed does give me an idea.

“Eye Wide Open Detective—”

I don’t give Nico a chance to finish.

“This is Helena Thorne, I just left your office an hour or so ago. I’m calling back because my circumstances have changed.”

“Have they?” Nico says, and I can hear him leisurely putting his feet up on his desk. I try not to imagine the smirk forming on his face, as he anticipates me retracting everything that I said earlier, reasserting my faith in my husband, and demanding my deposit back.

“Yes,” I say. “I no longer think Robert is cheating on me. However, I still need your assistance and you are free to keep my money.”

“I was going to anyway,” he says easily. “But please, continue.”

I glance at the sun in my passenger seat, mildly put-off by its presence. “You recall that I said
