THE BAINE WAS A RUGGED mountain range and they followed Bohdran who with KyRanna found the easiest footings in this difficult terrain. It was a pleasant walk at first, the landscape so different from where they had been. Open and uneven, the land seemed to go on forever, with delicate flowers and mosses growing up and around outcroppings of rock. The sun warmed them quickly and before long they began shrugging off their outer wear. Connomar fashioned a piece of braided leather and placed it across Terran’s right shoulder. He showed Terran how to hang his tunic from the leather and anything else he needed to carry. Connomar’s constant chatter was the only thing that kept Terran focused in the moment and soon the young Beigfurs lightness of spirit spread throughout the group, loosening the bonds of worry and anxiety that held them from the night before.

By mid-day the incline became much more pronounced and the work to simply continue walking was greatly increased. Terran looked back over his shoulder at Nemarra. She used a long stick to lean on, helping her negotiate the difficult terrain. Rocheene walked before her, kicking away any obstacles and clearing a path as best she could. Brooke and Shannara followed behind Nemarra, watching her and ready to help should she falter. Nemarra needed little help and trudged along contently, seemingly unaware of the concerns of those around her.

Connomar following Terran’s gaze spoke. “She will not complain that one.”

“Why not?” Terran turned to look at his friend.

“She feels not the discomfort. Nemarra can lift herself above the physical. She is probably watching from above right now, listening in on our conversation.” Connomar smiled ruefully.

Terran laughed. “Well, we better not say anything we would regret.” He spoke in his own tongue but Connomar followed his meaning.

“It would matter not. Nemarra already knows what is written in your heart.”

“Well, I don’t know whether that’s reassuring or not.” Terran said. Connomar shrugged and they walked on in companionable silence.

They rested at midday, tired and hungry. The elevation was beginning to reflect in the temperature and it was much cooler though the sun was at its full strength. Terran sat with Connomar, beside Simon and Tye. He stretched out and closed his eyes. Tye sat anxiously, unable to relax, alternately scanning between the direction they had come and the sky above. Bohdran chewing on a handful of blackberries sat down beside Tye and nudged him with his elbow. “You still watch for the Vanshee, even when the sun shines in the brightness of the sky.” It was a statement rather than a question and Terran opened his eyes and leaned up on one elbow. Tye turned to him. “Tell hawk-boy that I don’t care what they say about these Vanshee, I don’t trust them.”

Terran translated as best he could and Bohdran smiled when he was finished. “The Sons of Man trust not. Perhaps this is why there is much violence in your world.”

“Tell him” Tye continued, his voice tight, his eyes locked on Bohdran, “Tell him only a baby trusts completely.
