Keeping Her for Good

SUTTON

The steaks sizzled on the grill as I seared the edges.

“My mouth is watering just looking at them,” Dakota said, peeking over my shoulder, a big green salad in her hands.

“There’s not a lot I can cook, but grilling meat… That’s the one thing Duke Senior taught each of his sons. Even Bonnie knows how to grill a mean steak.”

“And that should surprise me because she’s a girl?” Dakota smirked and then hissed on a wince.

“You all right?”

She prodded delicately at the split in her lip. “Yeah, just forgot I had an ugly, jacked-up mug.”

I clacked the tongs in my hand to gain her attention. “My wife is not ugly. Woman, you’re the prettiest female I’ve seen in the entire state of Montana and beyond. Stop fishin’ for compliments,” I teased.

Her mouth dropped open, and she mock-glared playfully, putting the salad on the patio table. “Smooth talker, this one,” she said as she came back over to the grill and surprisingly wrapped her arm around my waist from behind and watched me do my thing. “What’s the secret to the Goodall method of grilling meat?”

I covered the arm that was over my abdominals with my free one, taking a moment to enjoy the closeness. We hadn’t spent much time just being together since we’d met at the auction. Today felt like the first day we could relax a bit and learn more about one another. And so far, I was learning that my wife liked to touch me. And I’d encourage her touch at any opportunity.

“Not sure I’m ready to give up all my secrets. How about this? You tell me a secret about yourself, and I’ll tell you one about me.”

“Hmm, a little game of tit for tat?” she cooed, sliding her arm away. “I’m game. Just let me get the corn on the cob. Is that almost ready?” She lifted her jaw toward the steaks.

I nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Fresh beer?” she asked.

I gave her a chin lift, and she responded in kind, her heart-shaped ass swaying as she entered through the back door that led straight into the kitchen. I watched that rear end until the screen door slapped back into place.

“Sutton, eyes off your wife’s ass. She’s hurt,” I warned myself. “Nothing good will come of watching that fine ass…” I continued talking to myself.

“What fine ass?” Dakota chuckled and placed two plates onto the table, one with a half cob of corn, the other with two full ears.

I grinned. “Just giving myself a reminder not to ogle my wife when she’s not feelin’ a hundred percent.” I pulled the steaks off and placed them on a serving platter.

“Ah, I see. Because your primal instincts can’t play nice?” Her tone was lighthearted.

“Somethin’ like that.” I grinned, went to the table, placed a thick, juicy slab of beef directly on each plate, and then set the platter to the side before taking my seat.

Dakota scooped up a heaping serving of salad and put it in the bowls next to our plates, then reached for her beer and held it aloft.
