It was Monday morning, and Devon and Ana walked down the hall to the judge’s chamber, then he signaled a pause just outside the cracked door. He had arrived early to request a meeting with the judge, but the moment they walked into the Global Union building, they were served with a summons to the chamber.

The previous two days had been ghastly. After pushing Devon and Ana into the back of the van, the guard glared at them, appearing eager to find any excuse to shoot them. A short time later half a dozen men leapt in to join them, and the van raced out of the warehouse, seconds before a series of enormous explosions rocked the vehicle.

That was when someone slipped a bag over Devon’s head. It felt like hours later that he was hauled out and seated in a wooden chair next to Ana. They both denied any knowledge of the whereabouts of the missing agents. From shadows in the back of the room, a man wearing a dark suit nodded, and one of the men injected Devon and Ana with some sort of truth serum.

At some point in her life, Ana must have acquired some interrogation training, because she steadfastly maintained she knew nothing. When it was Devon’s turn, the lead agent abruptly terminated the questioning as soon as Devon started babbling about how the agents teleported away through an underwater portal.

“This is a complete waste of time,” he said with disgust. “Clean them up and toss ‘em on the street.” Then he strode out of the small room. A few hours later, early Sunday morning, they were unceremoniously pushed out of a van into the alley behind Ana’s hotel. They spent the rest of the day recovering in her room. Since they were undoubtedly under deep surveillance, neither of them mentioned the idea of contacting Alex, back in Malhutan.

Now, standing outside the door to Judge Takenawa’s chamber, Devon placed his ear near the slight opening and listened.

“While we are waiting, that reminds me. How are the quarterly results for the Zone industries trending?” asked a man with a deep, upper-class quality to his voice.

“Civitronics revenues have dropped for the past several quarters,” a thin voice with a whiny edge responded. “Production is actually up but the value of the assets are dropping, primarily because they are working down their debt, and these assets have a high resistance to adding debt load.”

“What does your analysis recommend?” the man with the deep voice asked.

“We’ll meet our numbers for the current quarter,” the whiny man responded. “If we flush a new class of assets into the Zone early in the next quarter, the resulting divorces from the defaults will create enough economic friction to embed most of them for at least a couple of election cycles. The models do predict some increase in suicide, but the loss will mostly be low value assets, and is within an acceptable cost of business.”

“Excellent,” the first man replied. “Enact a debt relief program to clear out the weak assets from the Zone.
