The End of the Line

We all know people who carry and birth children and we know people who do not, for various reasons. The people who don't have genetic offspring are no less alive than the people who do, however, remaining childless is the one definite way not to pass down any DNA at all, including mitochondrial DNA. All people alive today are descendants of Lucky Mother, however, for the females/XX people who do not birth female offspring of their own to pass along their mitochondrial DNA, their personal branch of their mitochondrial line ends. That doesn't mean the haplogroup ends though, only the line on which there are no further female offspring. Just as various mitochondrial lines from Lucky Mother's time slowly went extinct until hers was the only one left that has living descendants, so too do they continue to do so today.
