Badger stared at the place where the girl and the sword had been. Where had she gone? He had been tricked. Now he would never get the sword. He began to cry. Now his daddy would surely be killed, and all because he had been taken in by the girlâs lies about her mother.
âHUMANNNNNNNNN!â
Badger gave a start when he heard the voice again.
âTHE SWORD IS FURTHER ON. SEEK IT. SEEK ITTTTTTT...â
âWhat? Who is it?â
âSEEK IT!â
Badger looked around. He could see no one. The booming grew louder. Maybe, he thought, I can still find some magic to help me. He listened for the strange voice again then began to walk deeper into the cave.
Half an hour later, he saw five swirling, glowing misty shapes racing towards him. They were coming so fast that Badger grew frightened. There was no way he could outrun them and there was nowhere to hide. Magic danced around them. Just when Badger thought he would be run over they stopped; the mist cleared and Badger could see the strange-looking creatures clearly.
They looked like men, but their skins were as white as paper. Each had blonde hair and blue eyes, a tail and two hoofed feet. But what drew Badgerâs attention was the fact that each of the creatures held a sword. All the swords looked exactly like the sword he had seen earlier.
âYes,â one of the creatures said, moving to stand in front of him. âThe Sword of the Ancients; one of us has it. It is up to you to choose the right sword then it is yours.â
Badger frowned. Then he noticed one of the creatures wink at him and nod to the sword he carried. Thatâs the one, thought Badger. He was about to point at the creature when the one who stood in front of him said, âIf you choose the wrong one you will have forfeited any chance of gaining the Ancient Sword, so choose carefully.â
Badgerâs frown deepened. But then the creatureâs next words shocked him.
âIf you choose the right sword four of us will die.â
The creatureâs blue eyes burned into Badger. Badger looked at the one who had indicated it carried the real sword. Once again it winked and nodded. But now Badger saw the creature beside it doing the same thing. Two others joined in. Four of them were nodding and winking in unison. Badger knew they couldnât all have the real sword. But how could he choose which one? He looked at the creature nearest to him.
âI have the real sword,â it whispered. âChoose it and the others will die. I will live and be rid of them and you will have the sword.â
Badger looked again at the others. They were all holding their swords higher. Theyâre trying to trick me, he thought. The nearest creature smiled and held out his sword.
âIs it the real one, thought Badger. I must choose. He was about to point at the nearest creatureâs sword when he remembered its words, âChoose the right sword and four of us will die.
