Chapter 9

Back in my own kitchen, I ate my now cold chicken. I gave Hero his nuggets which he graciously shared with the cats. Anyone who knows anything about cats knows that means he ate as many as he could before the cats took the rest away from him.

The call to the Wilsons went as planned. They are a middle-aged couple with two teenage daughters. Jake Wilson wasn’t about to let anyone hang around outside his house. He thought it was probably just a boy from his daughters’ school.

“Jake,” I said. “We should let the police handle it. I only called you in case you knew who was in the car.”

“Hmm. You may be right,” he replied. Then he started to chuckle. “The police would probably scare him more than I would anyway. Most of the kids know me.”

“It will also give him a great story to tell,” I said with a smile. “Do you want me to call the police?”

“No, Alex, I’ll do it. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.”

After disconnecting, I reviewed the conversation with Jake. Friendly but concerned. I like Jake. He never tried to engage me in small talk. I did feel a little guilty. The car would have never been in front of the Wilsons’ house if it hadn’t been for me, and I used Jake to get rid of it. I consoled myself with the fact that by contacting the Wilsons, I was still protecting them. The people in the sedan were there because of me, but that didn’t mean they were harmless to everyone else.

Before heading upstairs, I checked the locks on all the windows and doors and made sure the house alarm was armed and ready. Nothing like a little paranoia right before bedtime.

When I had the house renovated to accommodate Lost and Found Pets, I had a few other upgrades done as well. Originally, the upstairs had four bedrooms and two baths. I had once asked Nora why she and her husband, Donald, had purchased such a large house when it was only the two of them. She told me they wanted room for foster children. Nora and Donald had been foster parents for several years before he passed away from a heart attack. A month later, Nora had been diagnosed with cancer and decided to put fostering on hold.

It didn’t last long as six weeks later I arrived. Nora believed it was the best thing that could have happened to her at the time. It forced her to deal with her husband’s death and her own illness. Having someone else to care for gave her a reason to go on.

She and I had talked about renovating the upstairs many times. We just never got around to it. After she passed away, I decided it was time. I had two of the bedrooms converted into one large master suite. There is a small sitting room next to the windows and a beautiful master bath. It is my oasis.

When I entered the room, the curtains were open so I didn’t bother with the lights.
