Chapter 6: Founding Jamestown

Despite the loss of Roanoke, there were still plenty of reasons for continuing English activities in North America. In fact, for most of the 16th century, England’s presence in the New World occurred mainly through the seasonal movement of fishing vessels that made their way to the coast of Newfoundland before returning to Europe with their haul. England seemed uninterested in the exploration and colonization efforts of the Portuguese, Spanish and French until the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and besides, another major draw of North American exploration was the possibility of a sea-route to Asia. As one Englishman who came across French Canadian settlements in North America stated, he had been looking for “some route through these countries to the sea of the North...This good man related some wonderful things to us about new Mexico. ‘I have learned,’ said he, ‘that one can sail to that country through seas that are north of it. For two years I have ranged the whole Southern coast, from Virginia to Qiunebiqui [Kennebeck], seeking to find some great river or great lake that might lead me to peoples who had some knowledge of this sea which is to the North of Mexico. Not having found any, I came to this country to enter the Sanguene, and penetrate, if I could, with the Savages of the country, to the North sea.” (Kupperman, p.157)
