I yelped some more, and Axl nodded for Spike to stop.

He released me, and I fell back, clutching my elbow. Pain radiated up my arm, even though he’d let go. Had he broken it?

“You’re with us,” Axl said. “So if you tell anyone, you’ll only be ratting yourself out.”

“What does that mean?”

Axl shook his head. “We did this together. You knew what would happen if we went.”

“No, I didn’t!”

“You should have.” Axl rolled his eyes. “What did you think I was there for — baseball cards? I’ve got to get extra scratch where I can. Collecting sneakers ain’t cheap, you know.”

I wanted to run away. But I had to get the comics back to Logan somehow. For now, I’d have to pretend to go along with the game — or at least assure Axl I wouldn’t rat the Skulls out.

Rubbing my arm, I took a deep breath.

“Hey,” I said, “sorry about the freak-out. The Logan thing threw me, that’s all.” I took another breath. “I won’t tell. But could I just — see Rat Girl?” Maybe I could trick Axl into lending it to me so I could return it to the store.

“Okay.” Axl sounded relieved. “I didn’t think you were that stupid.” He motioned for Boris to hand it over.

Whoa.

It was issue #1!

My jaw dropped.
