Leon Deshpande emerged slowly from his thirty-minute swim in the Indian Ocean. A dark, stocky man of forty, he found his feet among the crashing waves that pound the hot shores of Kenya. Wading through the shallower waters, the midday sun splashing reflective light across his wet shoulders, he plodded up the deserted beach through soft sand that burnt the soles of his feet, watched from some distance by the pregnant Ramona. She nursed her swollen belly with both hands, standing under the shadows of the juniper trees on a grassy edge, admiring her man and his physique. He looked rugged and muscular, well-endowed and deeply tanned. Leon was her type of bloke, hot blooded and physical, quick and passionate, who worked hard and played hard. The fact that sometimes he had loved loose was a minor blip on his emotional landscape that she readily glossed over.

Two small children were playing with their French nanny in the glaring light on the grass nearby with plastic dolls and a bucket of water. They were bare skinned in swimming costumes and floppy hats, their backs and shoulders smeared with as much protective cream as they would allow. A motherly smile played across Ramona’s sun-tanned freckled face.

Leon’s male ambition and sexual desire were unashamedly mixed into a winning formula. He had a sixteen-year-old daughter from his only marriage, living in West London with her mother. Ramona well understood that Leon was a winner. She was not interested in how many other women he had serviced or how wide his seed had been flung. She had him now and was plotting a way to keep him. She thought that having his children might do the trick, but he remained as carefree as ever, travelling widely, always working on important projects in different countries. She would sometimes go with him on trips to Africa or South America, while other times she found herself left behind at home or in a hotel, where she would crave his presence. But her strength of character allowed her to sensibly balance without bitterness his professional demands and her personal desires. If there were painful gaps in that arrangement from time to time, well, she was compensated by his charisma and generosity. With her own experience of working in the civil service to guide her, she was able to act as his foil and sounding board, and so they remained in many ways perfectly matched.

Ramona was a self-consciously luscious beauty, perfectly browned by the sun, and Leon was besotted. She adored being pregnant and had decided, even without Leon’s agreement, that she would have at least another child after this one. She had been religiously creaming her legs, arms and chest, so the bright sunlight reflected exotically off her silky skin like metal. Her black hair flowed like a waterfall down her back.

Leon strolled across the rough grass, admiring Ramona’s pumped-up breasts courageously tucked into their pink bikini top, and caught the towel she chucked across to him. He had cropped dark hair, stubble on his chin and lots of soft hair on his chest.
