DAY 2 - VENICE, CA – NIGHT

HARRI

By the time Harri and Tom left the Great Guy Productions offices, the sun had gone down, and a cool breeze blew from the shoreline. The marine layer had rolled in and bathed Santa Monica in a light fog. The glow of the streetlights created a halo effect that made Harri think of noir films.

She checked her phone for messages and saw Tom doing the same. Jake had called several times during their interviews at the offices and had finally sent a text message saying he was getting on a flight to Maine. The only other message was from Officer Arboleta who’d texted her the contact info from Maddie’s cellphone.

“Looks like you missed as many messages as I did,” Tom remarked. He put his phone to his ear and listened to one of his messages. When he was done, Harri pointed at the stairs.

“Want to take the stairs this time?” Harri asked.

“Yes, in fact, I do,” Tom said. “It’s a gorgeous evening. Smell the air.”

“You don’t get much of that in the valley, do you?” Harri teased.

“Not so much,” Tom said.

They started down the stairs.

“Abe's assistant is positive he couldn’t have murdered his family. I've heard what assistants do for their Hollywood bosses and I imagine she’s seen a lot. The fact that she’s saying he wasn’t as psycho as some of her other bosses is making me think,” Harri said.

“She was emphatic about it,” Tom said. “I like that she knew so much about the THC wellness company he invested in.”

“I'm not surprised Lorraine knew nothing about that, and we haven't talked to anyone he was friends with yet,” she said.

“Any important messages on your end?” He paused on the landing.

“One from Officer Arboleta. I gave her Maddie’s phone to go through,” Harri said.

“Quick thinking on your part to unlock the phone with her face before the coroner took her away,” Tom remarked.

“I know it was ghoulish, but we sidestepped all the issues trying to get it open without a password,” she said.

“She found something?”

They made their way down the next set of stairs.

“She found the two most frequent numbers that didn’t belong to Abe or Lorraine. She tracked the names on Maddie’s social media. Maddie didn’t have their last names on the phone. Looks like her two best friends maybe. Both of them texted her the morning she died.”

“Did she send you their contact info?” Tom asked.

“She sent me their addresses and full names. I also had her run background on both of them. They’re clean, although that’s not a surprise. I’ll see if I can catch either of them at home now. They might have more information on this pot company. Hopefully, Maddie confided in one of them.”

“And hopefully they can give you some insight on what happened the week leading up to that morning,” Tom said.

“Arboleta sent me a download of the text messages between the three of them. Looks like Maddie’s preferred method of communication was texting,” Harri said.

“I won’t be able to join you on this excursion.
