The first explosion caught us completely off guard.

The SUV’s front end lifted as something detonated beneath us as I turned into the marina the GPS had led us to. I fought the wheel as we spun, tires screaming against the pavement. Rosa was already moving, her weapon up and tracking movement I couldn’t see yet.

“Down!” I yelled as the second explosion hit. This one flipped us completely, the reinforced frame barely holding as we rolled. I caught glimpses of sky, ground, and water through the windshield before we crashed to a stop against a storage container.

Tommy’s modified wheelchair harness had held, but he was cursing steadily in what sounded like three languages. Rosa kicked her door open, already returning fire at shadows moving between boats.

I scrambled out and ran around to pull Tommy free of the harness while rounds sparked off the SUV’s armor. His cast made everything awkward, but adrenaline helped as I dragged him behind the storage container.

“Stay here,” I ordered, checking my weapon. “Rosa?”

She tapped twice on her earpiece, which I knew meant she was okay—at least relatively speaking.

The marina offered almost no cover… just wooden docks, small storage sheds, a couple of storage containers along one side, and boats that wouldn’t stop bullets. The sun had set completely now, leaving us with minimal lighting from scattered security lamps.

A burst of gunfire forced me lower as rounds punched through the storage container. These weren’t normal weapons. The sound was wrong, deeper somehow, and the impacts carried more force than they should.

I heard three taps on my earpiece and knew Rosa was communicating again: “Incoming.”

I risked a glance around the container and spotted eight targets moving in pairs. Their movement was fast, fluid, and coordinated. It was like watching those African documentaries where predators stalked prey.

Tommy propped himself against the container, his cast scraping metal. “This is bad, isn’t it?”

“Could be worse,” I lied, checking my magazine. “You could be livestreaming.”

“Don’t give me ideas–”

“Down!” I yanked him sideways as something punched through the container where his head had been. The hole was massive, edges glowing slightly from the heat.

“What the hell kind of rounds are those?” I muttered.

Rosa’s rifle barked three times. A figure dropped on the dock, but their partner managed to take cover behind a boat.

“Okay, that’s definitely not good,” Tommy said, his voice higher than usual.

I caught movement to our left and fired twice. The target jerked but didn’t fall, their tactical gear seeming to absorb rounds that should have dropped them.

“We need to move,” I said as more shots sparked off the container. “This position’s compromised.”

Rosa tapped twice in agreement, and when I looked in her direction, she pointed toward a maintenance shed about fifty yards away. The only problem was the complete lack of cover between here and there.

I grabbed Tommy under the arms. “This is gonna suck.”

“Story of my life lately—holy shit!”

I yanked him down as one of the Foundation assets actually leapt over a boat, firing in mid-air with terrible accuracy but terrifying athleticism.
