She continued to stare at me. Her fingers moved. They clenched into fists and then back out again. The skin on her face seemed like leather, and her eyes burned into me without ever blinking, and then she pressed a finger up against her lips as if to silence not only me, but the entire class with that one omnipotent gesture. I became obedient quickly, out of pure fear if nothing else, and I closed my eyes tightly. I did not relish the thought of being stood up in front of the entire class as an object of derision.

Now I could think of nothing else but our formidable teacher. Was she still standing there? I didn’t know and I didn’t dare look to find out. My heart was pounding in my chest and my breathing was heavy, but I soon settled down into a normal state, though my eyes remained firmly closed.

I tried to think of something more pleasant, so I thought of recess, my dog, coloring, and my friends.

I felt good now, but I wasn’t about to open my eyes again. Getting caught once was unfortunate, but getting caught twice would just be stupid.
