I wake up to the sun streaming through the blinds and groan. It’s too early to be awake considering my mates and I didn’t go to sleep until dawn. Turning away from the light, I bury my face in Mishka’s hair and try to go back to sleep. It doesn’t work. After laying there for fifteen minutes I decide to get up. Slipping from the bed, I do my best not to wake my mates and head for the bathroom.

My mates are still asleep when I return so, I use my magic to dress myself in jeans and a t-shirt before I make my way downstairs. I’m in the mood to cook something special for my mates without the aid of magic. It’s been so long though, and despite being able to watch and learn how things are done over the past five hundred years, I’m not sure I know how to make something edible. Plus, I can’t exactly build a fire in the kitchen and use the open flame to fix a meal. I’d burn the house down if I tried that so, I need to come up with something else. Maybe, I should just go for it.

Conjuring a fire extinguisher, I place it by the stove in case I end up needing it, then I open the fridge and browse the shelves for ingredients I can use to cook a nice breakfast for my mates.

“What are you doing, moye serdtse?”

The sound of his voice causes me to jump and hit my head on the top of the fridge. “Ouch.”

Stepping back from the fridge, I rub the back of my head and let the door close. Mishka rushes over and takes my face between his hands, turning my head to the side. “Let me see it. I’m sorry, moye serdtse, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“I’m okay, honey. It was just a little bump. I’m not bleeding or anything.”

“Are you sure?”

I pull him into my arms and kiss the top of his head. “I’m fine.”

“So, what were you doing in the fridge?”

Feeling a blush stain my cheeks, I bite my lip and say, “I wanted to make you and Az breakfast without using magic, but I’m not sure I know what to do.”

He grins and says, “That’s okay, moye serdtse. I’ll help you. We’ll do it together and then take it to Az.”

He walks over to the fridge and opens the door, pulling out a number of ingredients, then he pulls a frying pan out from under the counter. When he turns towards the stove and spots the fire extinguisher, he laughs. “I promise you, moye serdtse, we won’t be needing this.”

He puts the pan on the stove and pours a little oil into it before he turns on the heat. Turning to me, he holds out a hand and says, “Come here. You’re going to help me.”

I walk across the kitchen and stand beside him. As the oil begins to crackle and pop, Mishka tears open a white package and says, “First, we’ll do the bacon then we’ll throw together some omelets.
