CHAPTER SEVEN

Lord Garreth sat behind his desk, a letter in his hands, the royal crest on the seal. A grave expression was written across his face as a knock came on the door. Sir Derrick and Lady Sylvia walked in and sat down.

“Garreth?” Sir Derrick prompted after a minute silence.

As if broken from a trance, Lord Garreth’s gaze snapped from the letter to them, shaking his head.

“My apologies,” he said, straightening in his chair.

“You sent for us,” Sir Derrick reiterated.

“I did,” Lord Garreth nodded. He held up the letter, the grave look lingering in his black eyes, “from the King.”

Sir Derrick’s gaze clouded as his eyes went to the letter.

“Problem?”

“It rather depends on how you would choose to look at it. I’ve been waiting for this to happen, I cannot say I’ve been looking forward to it.”

“To what?” Lady Sylvia asked, her mind quickly turning to the welfare of the beastlings.

“Garreth…” Sir Derrick warned, not liking his cryptics.

“King Bartholomew writes to inform me of the Midsummer Ball. This year he invites myself… and the beastlings,” Lord Garreth said, tone laced with annoyance, "the King says ‘You know I have every faith in you Garreth, but the royal council, along with many of the lord’s and nobles wish to see proof that these creatures are being properly controlled, and that they are no danger to civilized society. You report in your letters that they have been taught to behave as civilized human beings, yet you do not bring them to meet anyone. This puts my councillors on edge. My protection of you can only last so far, the people must see it for themselves…”

“To ogle them you mean?!” Lady Sylvia interrupted peevishly, “to give the nobles of the court a chance to stare at them like circus freaks. As if they are something to be gawked at.”

Lord Garreth continued, “ ‘Of course I understand with a total of thirty-one beastlings in your care to ask you to bring them all would not be a simple thing. I insist on seeing nine of them at the Midsummer’s Ball and I will leave the choice of whom to your own judgement…”

“Thank heavens for small mercies,” Sir Derrick muttered, scratching his forehead.

“‘Consider yourself and the nine beastlings in question my honoured guests, but let me be plain, old friend. I give you this as an official command from your King. Your friend always, etc…”

With that Lord Garreth put the letter on the desk.

Lady Sylvia shook her head, “We can’t put them through that.”

“We are not being given a choice Sylvia. This was always going to happen eventually.”

She pursed her lips, sitting back in her own chair with an agitated huff, “They are just children.”

“They are eighteen Sylvia,” Sir Derrick reminded her, “and Fabian has just turned twenty-one.”

“Who will you choose?” she asked after a moments silence, “nine of them to choose...”

"That is why I asked you here. We have just over six months to prepare nine of the beastlings for attending a royal ball.
