CHAPTER SIX
Today, I decide I’m going to take Lindsay’s advice and just have fun with the guy who used to be my best friend. I don’t want to leave here with things being awkward between us. Maybe this is my chance to get the closure that I couldn’t get four years ago.
I leave my room freshly showered and with a new attitude, and pause when I spot Beckett sprawled out on his bed, laptop where it’s supposed to be: on his lap.
He looks up as I lean against the doorframe. “It’s weird seeing you out of your normal habitat. Good morning.”
“Morning.” He tilts his head at an awkward angle to look at me. “My neck’s bothering me.”
“I’m not surprised, given the way you hunch over that thing. Maybe we should spend the day trying to get you to a chiropractor.”
“Absolutely not. I’ll make an appointment next week. I’ll be fine for the next couple of days.”
I cross the room, unable to not help the poor guy since I possess the skills to do it. It’s dangerous and stupid and probably going to flare up some of those feelings I’d just decided to tamp down, but friends don’t let friends live with neck pain.
“Sit up and turn around,” I say, coming to a stop near the edge of his bed.
He raises his brow. “What are you doing?”
I stretch my arms out and crack my knuckles. “I’m putting these babies to work. Assume the position, just like old times.”
I don’t have to tell him twice. He moves so his back is towards me and drops his head forward.
He sighs contentedly the second I start working out the first knot, and I don’t blame him. His whole upper body is full of tension. If he makes a few noises that make me want to jump his bones, well, I do a valiant job of ignoring them. It takes a while for me to cover his neck, his shoulders, his upper back.
All the while there’s this fluttering kind of possessiveness low in my belly at the familiarity of this. It makes me want to grab him and make him mine again.
“Okay,” I say, patting his shoulder once I’m sure I’ve been as thorough as I can possibly be. “All done.”
He reaches up and squeezes my hand in thanks before I take a step back to put some distance between us. He slings his legs off the side of the bed, then gets up and stretches. After a tentative tilt of his head to the left and the right, he smiles, looking relaxed, happy, and pain free.
“Thank you,” he says, eyes full of sincerity and this low-level lust that kind of makes me want to rip my clothes off and push him back onto the bed.
“What’s on the agenda for today?” Maybe if we get the hell out of here I can start thinking clearly and put the hornier side of me in time out. “Need to write some more before we go?”
“Nope.” He closes his laptop and puts it on his nightstand.
