Chapter 11

The Escape

‘It’s no good, Rufus. There is no way of escaping, you will have to think of something else,’ Larus pointed out, having watched Rufus for some time, consistently banging each bar with his beak to see if there was any obvious weakness in its structure.

‘Oh, and what do you suggest?’ Rufus snapped back in his eagerness to break free.

‘Don’t mind me, I am just trying to offer some help. I know you Robins are always sooo right,’ teased Larus, as he continued to watch Rufus from the comfort of his own crate, lounging back on his large white and grey wings.

‘How old are you anyway?’ Larus pondered.

Rufus stood up as tall as he could make himself, pushing his red chest out with annoyance.

‘I’m old enough, that’s all you need to know,’ snapped Rufus.

‘Alright. I was only asking. You look at bit young to be out here alone, that’s all,’ replied Larus, starting to enjoy winding up the feisty Robin again.

‘My parents died; I had no choice but to take over. I’m old enough now though and quite capable of looking after myself, thank you very much.’ Rufus snarled, hoping his words would silence the Seagull.

Rufus carried on banging each bar, as the noise was weirdly helping him ignore the painful memories of his parents which kept leaping into his mind, every time he spoke about them.

‘I’m sorry to hear about your parents,’ replied Larus, ‘truly, I am.’

‘Yep, well, it happens right?’ confirmed Rufus flippantly.

‘I’m sorry too,’ added Jack slowly beside him, narrowing his eyes at Rufus, as if deep in thought.

‘What?’ asked Rufus after a while of starting to feel paranoid about the way Jack was looking at him.

‘Nothing, its nothing,’ replied Jack quickly looking away.

‘Anyway,’ Larus continued, ‘aren’t you Robins supposed to understand those Beings? Why can’t you ask them to let us go free instead of all that banging?’

‘They don’t understand me, it is a one-way thing,’ mumbled Rufus, ‘anyway, they think we squeak and chirp, honestly why would we do that?’

After a few moments, Rufus finally fell back against the side of his crate in disappointment, letting his eyes wander around his confinement.

‘If only I could see how to…,’ he began, as his eyes then rested on a piece of the crate which looked out of place. A strange shape appeared to jut out near the front of the crate. Hopping onto his claws, he made his way over and started to poke it. To his surprise it moved easily, so he nudged it again. Quickly, he realised that this odd shape of a latch had been holding closed the front of the cage.

‘What the?’ Rufus exclaimed in excitement as the front of the cage slowly started to swing open and freedom was in sight.

Seconds later, his excitement quickly turned to pure fear as the door of the room went bang and in wandered a Being, causing all the birds to instantly freeze in their crates. Helplessly, he hoped it wouldn’t attract the Being’s attention, as the crate door continued to creak and groan as it freely opened itself.
