Half an hour later, Curtis reappeared in the front room. His face had a waxy sheen of sweat glistening on the skin, and his eyes appeared as if they were still in the bedroom.
Bentley popped the tab on another can. His last. He needed an alert mind to carry out the rest of his plan. âHow was it?â
âGood, thanks.â
âDid the bed move for you?â
Curtis brayed laughter. âNice one.â He sat on the sofa and finished his can. âWhatâs happened to her face? Itâs covered in bruises.â
âShe got lippy, so I had to put her in her place.â
âCool.â
âThatâs the thing with women, Curtis â they need to know the boundaries. If you let them step over the line, then thatâs it! Youâre in for a whole heap of trouble.â
âWhat did she do wrong?â
âTalked too much.â
Curtis nodded, as if that made perfect sense. âHow long you gonna keep her strapped to the bed?â
âAs long as it takes for her to realise she needs to keep her big mouth shut.â
âYou might wanna give her some water, Jim. Itâs roasting in that bedroom.â
âAnd you might wanna keep your nose out of my affairs if you donât want it broken.â
Curtis recoiled as if the words had physically assaulted him. âIs there anything else you want me to do?â
Bentley didnât answer. He walked into the kitchen and returned with a large carving knife. âThis baby could carve the meat right off the bone just by showing it the blade.â
Curtisâs eyes looked as if he didnât doubt that for one moment.
âWassamatta, donât you like knives?â
âI do when theyâre in a drawer.â
Bentley flipped the knife around and held it by the blade. Offered the handle to Curtis. âYou feel the weight of that. Itâs perfectly balanced.â
He took the knife and held it out in front of him. âCool.â
âYou ever stabbed anyone, Curtis?â
He shook his head. âI donât like blood.â
âWhy?â
âIt gives me the willies.â
âLike you just did to Shona?â
âHuh?â
âGave her the willies.â
Curtis tried to laugh but only emitted a strange noise somewhere between a cackle and a whine.
âDo you think Iâve ever killed anyone?â
Curtisâs eyes widened. âI donât know. Have you?â
âTwice. The first one was an accident. I strangled some tart I picked up on a one-night stand.â
âHow was it an accident?â
âBecause she was into all that choking bollocks, and it went too far.â
âJesus.â
âBut I meant to do the second one. He owed me money and kept fobbing me off with a load of crap about needing more time to pay.â
âSo you killed him?â
Bentley nodded. âTook the fucker round the back of the old Waitrose and slit his throat. Could say I bled him dry.â
This horrific news drained all the colour from Curtisâs face. He looked like a wannabe ghost. âAnd you got away with it?â
Course I did. I just made it up to keep you in your place. âMurderâs easy when itâs just a random act. The filth donât have nothing to go on. As long as you wear gloves and donât leave any DNA at the scene, theyâve got no chance of tracing you.
