Josie was having breakfast with Tracy and Jack in the kitchen when she heard the rumble of engines in her driveway that Monday morning. She opened a crack in the drawn living room curtains by the window’s edge to reveal a half a dozen vehicles in front of the cabin. The FBI’s black Chevy Suburban was in the front. Behind it was an unmarked car, probably an Indigo Valley police car, followed by other black Chevy Suburbans. Josie knew something was about to go down, but she didn’t know what. She turned to the kids and said, “Tracy, Jack, there’s a line of police and FBI vehicles out here. Now I need you two to listen to me and pay close attention.”

Jack dropped his spoon into his cereal bowl and froze.

Tracy jumped from her seat, gripping the back of her chair. “Mom, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know, but I’m asking you both to help me. No matter what happens today, don’t react. Just swallow your emotions whole and let it all play out around you. Don’t say a word to anyone. Let me do the talking. You got that?”

“Mom, I’m afraid,” Tracy said in a shaky voice.

Josie buried her own emotions, trying to lead by example. She calmly said, “Just stay tough and stick together. We’ll get through this, just as we’re doing with the virus. Jack, did you hear me?”

He hadn’t moved an inch. His lips trembled, like he was trying to say something. He stared through his cereal; his face grew redder. Josie had seen that same look in Eddie right before he blew a gasket. When Josie saw reflections of Eddie in Jack, she always told herself that Jack wasn’t the same as his father. She’d say to herself, He’s just a kid. He’s his own person. He isn’t Eddie. Yet Jack’s inky, wavy mop didn’t help—he had his father’s hair and his glassy black eyes, too. But Josie focused on the shape of his head. It was oval like hers.

“Earth to Jack,” Josie said sharply, “do you read me?”

Jack’s head popped up; he locked his gaze onto his mother’s eyes, then nodded without saying a word.

Josie whipped out her cell from her jeans rear pocket and dialed up David. His phone began to ring as she saw the front doors of the lead FBI SUV open slowly. Josie pleaded, “Come on David, please pick up.” She spotted the faces of FBI agents Smith and Roberts—a government-imposed mask mandate was still a month off. “I need you now, David,” she muttered. The agents stood behind their doors and looked around.

“Hey, Josie,” David answered.

Josie blurted, “Don’t say anything, David. Just listen. I’ve got a bunch of FBI and police vehicles in my driveway. Two FBI agents look like they’re scoping out the place from their SUV.” She saw one guy point in the direction of her small barn, twenty yards from the cabin. “I don’t know what’s going on.”

“Okay, Josie. Take a deep breath and listen up. Do exactly what I say.
