Chapter 11

When dinner was served, Miguel was still quiet in his inner world without saying a word at the table. I fiddled with my fork in the food and forced myself to eat some more even though I wasn't hungry. Beth looks at me over the flowers on the table and gives a yellow smile a little puzzled by the sudden silence at the table, she crosses her hands over her lap and turns her head to the side, shooting a glance in her son's direction.

— I've been holding back from asking — the lady said, suddenly drawing Miguel's attention,— I'm very curious about how you two met.

I smile nervously and kick Miguel's foot under the table. He squares his shoulders immediately and huffs.

— I need to smoke a cigarette. — He says getting up.

— Not at all,— I said, knocking him on the table, taking him by surprise, — Sit down, your mom wants to know how we met, honey.

Miguel rolls his eyes and sits back down again, settling himself comfortably in his chair. He blinks in my direction with a tolerant look that clearly shows how much he wishes he had let me drown in the lake earlier. Miguel scratches his chin as if trying to revive the nonexistent memories of how we met and then smiles.

— I hired Veronica from an escort agency, we barely knew each other.

I choked and coughed, almost having a heart attack. Beth shook her head and let out a high pitched laugh that could shake a flower pot, nervously, I joined her and started laughing too hoping that Miguel hadn't screwed up. What's he thinking? I'm in this up to my eyeballs, he can't just go around saying stuff like that.

— I'm serious, honey. I'm sure you two have a good story about it.

— Of course — I announced quickly before Miguel said another nonsense — We were at a party, I got lost in the corridors and found your son smoking alone in a bathroom.

Miguel looked at me with those dark green eyes of his, perhaps surprised that I had told him the absolute truth. It's not as if I had told his mother that this was a party where I had been hired as an escort for some gentlemen, much less that he had made me an indecent proposal in the first few minutes of our brief conversation.

Beth leaned over and propped her face in her hands interested in the subject.

— Is that so? And how did you know you were in love?

— It was love at first sight. — Miguel opened an innocent smile and stepped on my foot under the table — When I saw Veronica for the first time I knew I had found the perfect girl.

I couldn't contain my laughter.

— And when I saw little Michael that day I knew he would be the father of my children. — I said back.

— Children? — He widened his eyes in surprise.

— All four of them. Or maybe a football team, we are still considering the possibility.
