Chapter 22

The following day came a breakthrough. Jackie Ojo was in a newsagent close to Cedar House when the call came; she’d been assessing two equally soggy-looking sandwiches in the vain hope of grabbing a quick lunch break. She listened to what DS Vincent had to say, paid for what looked like a cheese and tomato sponge, and hurried to her car.

When she arrived at the Hope Estate, a uniform PC manning the cordon at the crime scene pointed to a cul-de-sac on the other side of the road where two blue-gowned forensic officers were huddled over a drain grill with a detective constable from CID. One of the SOCOs was kneeling, working carefully at the edge of the drain. But it was the other one, stood next to him, who caught her eye. He was holding a long transparent evidence container, the type specifically used for the recovery of knives. As Ojo got closer she could clearly see what was inside: a zombie knife with dark, rust-coloured stains on its teeth.
