The three judges had copious food and drink served to their guest; then Ganhaus offered to take the pretend mask wearer to his apartments.

“Why do you act as if you’re Amos Daragon?” he was finally able to ask his brother. “And where is the real mask wearer hiding?”

“Happy to see you too,” Uriel answered. “We haven’t seen each other in years. You’ve changed a lot, young brother, and I am glad to see that you have become a very important person.”

“Listen to me, Uriel, we do not have time to waste on small talk! I don’t like you and I never did. I became a judge precisely to punish the kind of man you turned out to be. Murderers disgust me. If I had you freed from hell, it was for a specific reason.”

“I can see that you have a deep sense of family!” Uriel snickered. “You always used Father, Mother, and me to achieve your ambitions. Even dead and buried, you haven’t changed! You’ve become worse than me, your honor!”

“Listen to me carefully. I had you freed from the eternal torments and fire of hell and you owe me. You are here to do away with Amos Daragon, and to get hold of the key of Braha. Seth told you this himself, I believe.”

“Yes, and that is all I know,” Uriel confirmed. “I was also to tell Amos the story of an elf locksmith.”

“But where is this famous Amos Daragon?”

Uriel, murderer that he was, answered with a wicked grin. “I introduced him to you under the name of Darwich Socks. He is the mask wearer!”

“I beg your pardon? The boy?”

“Not just any boy. I played along with his game so as not to unmask—ha!—myself too quickly. It is an excellent cover for him as well as for me.”

“What is he like?”

“This boy’s intelligence and quick mind are exceptional. And to think I pretended to be a man of learning in front of him! It was tough. Fortunately, during the long journey, his attention was entirely on his mission. We talked a lot and played cards. He’s a very honest and respectful boy. He caught me cheating a few times and never mentioned it openly. But now, tell me, what do you expect me to do next?”

“I want you to follow Amos Daragon, and when he finds the key of Braha, steal it from him. Throw his body in the Styx! I want you to hand me the key, that is all!”

“But it is Seth who wants the key. I am supposed to give it to him, not you!”

“Listen, brother,” Ganhaus answered, amused. “I have the power to send you back to hell! If you follow my orders I promise you will be pardoned and sent to paradise. If not, as soon as the doors reopen, I will make sure you return to the fire and the demons! I am a judge. Remember that. With a file such as yours, your case will be decided quickly! Think it over. I will come back for your answer.
