When Someone Is Generous to a Fault
Sometimes a person can simply be too generous. Giving willingly and freely can no doubt be a virtuous endeavor. But when people give so much of themselves that they not only neglect themselves but also discourage others to do for themselves, it can create significant problems.
The Story of Hilda, Mary, and Henry
Hilda was taken aback when she heard the news. Although her father, Henry, certainly wasnât getting any younger and hadnât been in the best of health lately, it was still a shock to learn heâd suffered a stroke and was now partially paralyzed. Now, she was faced with a real problem: Henry had no wife, and his only sibling had recently passed away. He would need someone looking after him, and she was all the family he had left, being his only child. Hildaâs relationship with Henry had been somewhat strained over the years. But he was still her father, and now he really needed her. She couldnât see simply shipping him off to a convalescent facility. Besides, it really wasnât time yet to take such a drastic action. Still, she had some very mixed feelings and reservations about the situation she faced.
Hilda wondered if there could possibly be a worse time in her life to be confronting the issues now before her. She had only recently begun to carve out a decent life for herself. For years, sheâd been taking care of so many others that she had neglected herself in the process. She had been eating poorly, exercising little, and generally not paying much attention to her own welfare. Her weight had become a significant problem, and a lot of the other things she struggled withâthe back strain, the knee pain, the high blood sugar and borderline diabetesâwere all related to that issue. For too long, eating was one of the few indulgences in Hildaâs life, and inasmuch as she denied herself on so many other fronts, it was hard for her to resist that late-night snack or extra piece of pie. But all that had finally begun to change several months ago when she committed herself to an entirely new path. She signed a contract with a fitness center and had started working out every day. She was also watching her sweets, simple carbs, and fats. She was actually starting to pay more attention to herself in general, especially because Mary, her forty-one-year-old daughter, who had moved back in with her on three separate occasions over the past fifteen years, had recently moved out once again, possibly for good. Hilda had finally come to a place where she might possibly claim a life of her own, yet she was once again dealing with the prospect of taking care of someone else. So naturally, she had mixed feelings.
Hilda was also unsure she would even be able to adequately care for Henry. She had few financial resources, and only recently found it possible to cover all the bills with a little left over.
