“You talked to Skylar already, right?” Mallory asked. “And Lisey?”

Ava sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose between her eyes. “Mallory, I can’t tell you anything they said. I’ve already explained this to you twice.”

“I’m not asking you to. I’m just saying, they’ve already told you the same thing, I bet.” Mallory glanced at the door. “Are you sure no one can hear us?” she whispered.

“No one can hear you. I can barely hear you.”

“Good. I’m telling you, the Holdens are into some shady business and it could have gotten them killed.”

“Mallory, I need details. Shady business—”

“Shh!” Mallory came out of her seat, eyes wide, and lunged toward Ava with the other hand outstretched. “Jesus, please keep your voice down. Do you want me to be next?”

Ava moved sharply to the left, deflected Mallory’s hand, realized she was in no danger, and pointed to the empty seat angrily. “Sit down, and don’t do that again.” She uncurled her other hand from around the grip of the pistol at her side and took a breath.

“Oh, God, I’m sorry. It’s just so dangerous. Just please, don’t say stuff like that so loudly while I’m in here. I know you probably think we’re all just a bunch of rich kooks, but we’re not.” She glanced at the door again. “Their profits didn’t double and triple so quickly because their products are so damn good, I’ll tell you that much. And they do a lot of dealings at the border.” She sat back in her seat and raised her hands to shoulder level. “Just saying. I think the groom knows. Whether or not he’s involved?” She shrugged. “But probably that’s a hard yes, too.”

“And you don’t have any specifics about any of it? No kind of proof at all? Nothing to use to get proof?”

She thought for a moment and then shook her head. “But here’s some more for you. Jansen and Kane are covering something up, too. I’ve known it since Sherry got killed. And yes, I said since she got killed. She didn’t die by misfortune or accident or whatever they’re trying to pass it off as. I bet you already heard a dirty deet or two about J and K, too.” She scoffed and held up a hand. “I know. You can’t tell me that. You don’t have to. Rachel, Skylar, Celine, any of them would have spilled it already. We’ve all been seeing things around town since Thanksgiving that makes us think they are shaking the sheets every chance they get, but maybe she doesn’t want to as much as he does.”

“And what does that have to do with anything? They’re adults and can do as they please.”

“She has a long-time beau.”

Exasperated, Ava shrugged. “I don’t condone cheating, but to each her own. That’s her business and I’m not in the business of gossip. If you’ve not seen or heard anything relevant to the ongoing, current investigation, Mallory… we’re done here. You’ve got enough on your plate as it is, I think.
