BAVARIAN BRILLIANCE

BAYERN MUNICH 1974–1976

The Bayern Munich team that won a hat-trick of European Cups in the mid-seventies rarely receives the plaudits of the other great sides that preceded them.

If there was a perception that their wins in the finals were lucky, to reach that stage on three consecutive occasions was a remarkable achievement. Take, for example, the first of their victories in 1974: before facing Atlético Madrid in the decider, they had to overcome Åtvidaberg (on penalties), Dynamo Dresden, CSKA Sofia and Újpesti Dózsa. No pushovers there.

Leeds United supporters still seethe about the events of the 1975 final. They must have a case because if there’s one thing you don’t expect from Yorkshiremen, it’s a longstanding sense of resentment.

There was even some bitterness about the win that completed Bayern’s trio of European crowns the following year. Their opponents, Saint-Étienne, blamed the design of the Hampden Park goals for their defeat. They maintained that if the posts had rounded edges, rather than squared ones, a Jacques Santini header that hit the upright when the game was goalless would have gone in.

By this stage it appears that even the Bayern fans had grown jaded with success, as the welcome they received upon their return to Munich was flatter than a tuba note on the last day of Oktoberfest. In fairness, think how bored you’d feel if your club won three European Cups in a row.
