Chapter Eleven

Volume 10; Entry 63; Edward Ellis:

I begin to fear for the future of the Ellis line. When Jack began all those years ago I'm certain he had not considered a future when there would be so many of us. It becomes difficult to handle and control the many branches and members.

Only yesterday Nick requested my permission to move to downtown Denver. I have no need of him in Denver because Frank's family controls the Denver area.

Still I might have considered his request if he wasn't already situated exactly where I need him to be. Nick has never been particularly happy with his position as coroner, but that is where I need him, so that is where he will stay.

There has not been a single Ellis whose request I have not denied at some point or another. Some take it well because they understand and respect the rules, but others do not bow to my rule, or Jack's rules, so easily.

It was a simple matter to say they were going to go to war, but having said it, Gavin wasn't entirely certain how to carry it out. Everyone had arrived prepared. They had their guns, their knives, their batons, their syringes, and their wires. So he had an army, but he wasn't sure where and how to fight the war.

"I want each of you to reach out to your contacts. We need to know where they are," he said, figuring locating the assassins was the first step. "They're English. There're still a large number, at least fifty or more. Someone has to have seen them."

"They're English?" Alistair asked in disbelief.

"Yes; highly trained and extremely committed."

"And you say their goal is to wipe out the Ellis line?" Alistair snorted. "For what reason?"

"I have no idea what their reasoning is," Gavin ground out, trying not to feel like a child arguing with his elders. "I've engaged with them twice, and they didn't try to kill me either time. Which tells me they need me for some reason, and the only reason to need me is to find all of you."

Alistair ran a hand through his silver hair and gave Gavin a condescending smile. "Or perhaps, you made all this up. Perhaps you were tired of being under your father's thumb. Perhaps you killed him, Danny, and Joseph. Perhaps there are no 'villains'."

Gavin growled softly. Maybe his example hadn't been big enough or extreme enough. How many Ellis's was he going to have to kill before they accepted his rule?

"Or it could be you," Gavin countered. "Maybe you were sick of watching from the sidelines as my father, Danny, and Joseph controlled all the major fields. Perhaps you thought to eliminate me as well, and then gain control of the family through some sort of democratic vote. Perhaps you and Frank were in on it together," Gavin accused softly.

Alistair paled and stepped backward. "I had nothing to do with your father's death, I swear."

"You have more motive than I do," Gavin said, eyes hard.
