“Daddy!” Kellie shouted when we walked through the door.

“Pumpkin! How was your day?” I asked as I scooped her up in my arms.

“It was good! Mrs. Jane helped me make spaghetti and meatballs, but we did it the right way, like I said to do it — like Stella does it!” She left my arms and ran over, throwing herself around Stella as she walked through the door.

“Bella!” Kellie then shouted as Bella ran through the door, barking and leaping about. She tore herself away from Stella and ran over to the dog, bending over and picking her up in her arms and stroking her coat. “You are going to live with us from now on, and we’re all going to be a great big family!”

“Yes, we are,” Stella said as she set her boxes down on the couch. Before she had the chance to say anything else, Mrs. Jane walked through the door to the kitchen with a pan of garlic bread in her hands.

“Do you need help bringing anything up from the car, or would you like me to help you with the unpacking?” she asked as she looked from me to Stella and back again.

“No, that is very kind of you, but I think we’ve got it handled,” I replied. She gave me a look that told me she would rather stay with us, but I didn’t really care. I loved the old woman to death, but I wasn’t going to need her to be a nanny for Kellie any longer, and I didn’t want her to be there for our first dinner as a family. She had done so much for me, but I wanted to thank her through a bonus paycheck rather than treat her to dinner.

“Well, if there is anything else you need, feel free to let me know,” she said as she gathered her things. She had left the garlic bread on the counter, and I sighed as I called after her.

“You’re welcome to take some of dinner with you!”

“No, no, no. You guys enjoy it. I’ll pick up something on the way home.” She looked over her shoulder with a professional smile, and with that, she was gone. I wanted to tell her I would have her last paycheck in the mail, but I shrugged it off. She would figure it out, and I had other things on my mind.

Together, the three of us brought the rest of Stella’s things up into the apartment, then we all sat down on the couch with a sigh.

“Dinner is ready! We better eat it before it gets all mushy!” Kellie announced. She ran toward the table which had already been set with dishes, and Stella and I exchanged a look.

“You’ve taught her well,” I said to Stella with a smile. She shook her head and rose from the couch, holding her hand out to me as she did so. I took it, and the two of us walked to the kitchen together.

“If you ask me, I think she takes after her father,” she replied.
