This greenhouse on the campus of Pennsylvania State University is the site of Diana’s indoor honey bee experiments.
Diana watches bees feed inside the greenhouse. Sugar syrup is dispensed from the plastic jug and protein patties are stacked on the paper plate.
Just like her foraging sisters outdoors, this greenhouse honey bee gets covered with pollen while feeding.
There are other advantages to greenhouse experiments, too.
“Part of the problem now,” Diana says of the past CCD studies, “is that most of the bees from a collapsing colony are never found. In a greenhouse we should be able to find the dead bees.”
